The “world's most advanced” humanoid robot has been put to work greeting visitors at a museum in Dubai. Ameca, a bot created by Cornwall-based firm Engineered Arts, is able to answer questions and offer directions at the Museum of the Future. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) to generate speech and can make different facial expressions, like frowning, grinning, winking and pursing its lips.

Majed Almansoori , deputy executive director of Dubai Future Foundation, said: “Ameca is the most advanced humanoid robot in the world. Specifically because of its use of artificial intelligence, its bionic movement, its facial expressions, and you can see as well from Ameca how it can look directly at you. It can move its face similar to how a human being would move.”

A clip shows Ameca manning the guests relations counter, where it demonstrates that it is able to speak in English and Arabic. It even cracks jokes, saying that it runs only on “three triple A batteries” and that it enjoys being a robot because it “doesn't age and cracks no wrinkles”.

"Designed specifically as a platform for development into future robotics technologies, Ameca is the perfect humanoid robot platform for human-robot interaction," Engineered Arts writes on its website. While the android can't walk at the moment, the robotics company says it is working on a version that makes it even more human-like.

Nation leads world in renewable energy

Supported by full supply chains and robust policy measures, China has achieved leapfrog development in renewable energy in recent years, with its installed capacity ranking at the top globally. After years of development, the nation is the world's largest producer of wind and solar power, as well as the largest domestic and outbound investor in renewable energy, according to the National Energy Administration.

The combined installed capacity of wind and solar power has reached 670 million kWs, almost 90 times the level in 2012, the administration said.

The nation's rapid development in renewable energy has further boosted global employment. According to the recently released Renewable Energy and Jobs Annual Review 2022, from the International Renewable Energy Agency, employment worldwide in the sector reached 12.7 million jobs last year, with China accounting for nearly half the total, despite the lingering effects of COVID-19 and the global energy crisis.
