Let's start with The Style.

Because Colombia is a very multicultural country, it took Disney several years to hone in on the overall visual style that Encanto would have.

Some of the visual that was recreated included floral balconies…that are widely popular in cities like Cartagena.

We also see bougainvilleas, which are very colorful ornament vines that are common on many Colombia homes.

And of course, the architecture in Encanto is very clearly Colombian.

These colonial-style homes that include balconies that are filled with flowers are iconic to the region.

When it comes to the characters in Encanto… specifically, the Madrigal Family… they were designed with several different types of skin tones to reflect the overall makeup of Colombia as a whole.

Colombia has a large population that is made up of many different indigenous groups, as well as those of European, African and mixed descent.

And you can see this reflected with the character of the family. And you'll also notice the level of details, put into very specific types of Colombian clothing from the very specific areas, such as the traditional sombrero vueltiao hat.

But going a little deeper into the film's backdrop, let's talk about the Historical Setting.

Although it isn't outright stated, it can be hypothesized that part of the movie takes place during the turn of the last century… that is 1899 to 1903.

Specifically when the character Alma and the three babies flee because of violence in the place that they are living.

If you look at many of the clothing styles, things do link up with the eras later on… But specifically, 1899 to 1903, was when The War of a Thousand Days took place in Colombia.

This was a major Latin American conflict between the Conservative and Liberal parties over fraudulent elections and resulted in over 100,000 death which was about 2.5% of the Colombian population.

With the amount of overwhelming violence and displacement of people during this time, it makes sense, especially based on the styles we see later throughout the movie… that this was the conflict that we see these characters flee in the flashback. which led to the origin of the film's enchanted house in the mountains.

But let's talk about the centrepiece of Encanto.

Magical Realism.

Magical Realism is one of the most influential movements in Latin American storytelling and literature.

Made particularly significant by Colombian Novelist, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

哥伦比亚小说家加夫列尔·加西亚·马尔克斯的作品使之更具影响力。

This unique style narrates everyday life by placing an emphasis on the fantastical, without actually stating that anything is out of the ordinary.

Essentially tales that portray magical or fantastical events.

So, let's look at some of the characteristics of Magical Realism in literature.

They include: A realistic setting, set somewhere in our world, as well as Magical elements, such as talking objects or telepathy, or something all around fantastical.

The reader or audience is given limited information, as Magical Realism authors deliberately leave the magic in their stories unexplained in order to normalize it as much as possible. And that magic is also used to help critique or explain something in society.

Garcia Marquez's famous novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude showcases this; in fact it really defined magical realism as we understand it today...

One of it's most iconic literary images is that of yellow butterflies fluttering around Mauricio Babilonia, one of the story's main characters.

These butterflies seem to have a magical connotation, but are still rooted in reality.

These yellow butterflies are shown in Encanto as a clear homage to one of Colombia's most influential novelists.

In fact, the movie is also filled with yellow flowers. Both yellow flowers and butterflies have come to be a symbol that represents the author.

Digging a bit more into this theme of magical realism, you can really see the connection to Encanto.

Mirabel's family represents the magical and fantastical while Mirabel represents realism.

But one of the greatest achievements regarding cultural representation in Encanto is capturing the Colombian Concept of Family.

Family is obviously a universal theme regardless of culture, but Encanto really hones in on the strong effort to ensure that every family member achieves his or her full potential.

It's a common tradition throughout most regions of Colombia to celebrate most achievements with a huge party.

This of course oftentimes being led by the Matriarch of the family, which we see in the character Abuella Alma.

The concept of family is also strongly reinforced in Encanto, thematically, with the family house as Colombian families tend to keep a strong attachment to their childhood homes.

We also see this reflected with Encanto being one of the only Disney movies that focuses on extended family to the degree that it does. Not just parents and children, but also aunts, uncles and cousins.

Another animated film that was set in Latin America.

And finally, let's wrap things up with The Music of Encanto.

Encanto's original songs were by Lin-Manuel Miranda, but the original score was done by Germaine Franco who is best known for the songs and score for Disney's Coco, which was set in Mexico.

Encanto's creators wanted the score to weave in and out of the songs in order to tell the story with Mirabel's emotions, and really emphasize the theme of magical realism.

There is a big emphasis on traditional folk instruments in the score, including the accordion, which is a huge element to Colombian folk music.

But also the three-stringed guitar, tambora bass drum; the gaita, a cactus made flute, a harp and the marimba de chonta, a percussion instrument specific to the region.
