「So you can see how Mr Bump had his little accidents! Mr Bump had had...」

"Had had", he had had.So we got repeating here." He had had a lovely time at the park."

Had had,

He had had many jobs, but somehow they never seemed to last very long. As soon as anything got lost or broken or splintered...」

If we snap somethingsometimes we get little bits of wood or plastic. They are splinters.

...or chipped or snapped or crackedor torn or burst or wrenched or crunched or split or slit, Mr Bump got the blame.

Oh dear, what has he got in his hand? He's got a broom and a broom handle. He's got the brush at the bottom and the handle in the other hand.

What should they be? That's right, they should be together. So he's broken the broom. Or sometimes we call it a brush. But broom is the proper name. Oh dear, poor Mr Bump.

For instance. When Mr Bump worked on a farm, he tripped over the farm dog and spilt the milk which he was carrying for the farmer's wife and which the farm cat lapped up.」

Oh dear. He spilt all the milk, he tripped over the farm dog.

For instance. When Mr Bump was a postman, he got his hands stuck in the pillar-box and they had to fetch the fire brigade to come and set him free.」

Now look at the red pillar box. A pillar box is where we put the letters. Then the postman takes them to all the people. But here, he's put his hand in. He shouldn't be doing that anyway. And look what's happened. It's got stuck. Oh dear.

For instance. When Mr Bump was a bus conductor, he fell off the bus and he couldn't catch it up again and all the passengers traveled without having to pay.

So on some buses you pay the driver, but on some buses there is a bus conductor and they come round the bus and you pay them for the journey.

What is Mr Bump done? He's fallen off the busand all the people on the bus, they don't have to pay. I bet they're happy. But I don't think the people that own the bus will be very happy. Silly Mr Bump.

For instance. When Mr Bump was a carpenter...」

A carpenter is someone who makes things out of wood.

...he found that when he was hammering nails he hammered his thumb most of the time and the nail hardly at all.

Oh ouch! If you hit your thumb with a hammer that would really hurt.

In order to recover...” to make himself feel better...“from this series of rather unfortunate happenings, Mr Bump decided to take a holiday.

There he could think about what sort of job he could dowhere he wouldn't be such a nuisance to everybody. So off he set to the station to catch a train to the seaside.」

Now a "nuisance", that's a funny word here. A nuisance, it means when you keep annoying people, you keep getting things wrong, you are a nuisance.

It's not a very nice word, it's not a nasty word but... if you say someone's being a nuisance, it's not very nice. It means that they're annoying you. And poor Mr Bump that he annoys everyone because he gets everything wrong. Everything he does, it ends up in a bit of a disaster.

So, all of these bad things have happened and he thinks "Oh, I can't cope with this. I need to go on a holiday to recoverto make myself feel better." So he's gone to the station to catch a train.

When we get on a train, we call it "catching a train"."catching" normally means to catch a ball, but we can catch an aeroplane, we can catch a train. It means that we go on to the train or the aeroplane.

当我们坐火车时,我们称之为catching a train赶火车)”catch通常意味着抓球,但我们可以catching an aeroplane赶飞机),可以catching a train赶火车)”。

While Mr Bump was on holiday, several things happened.

For instance. He fell off a boat into the sea and the lifeboat had to come and rescue him.」

Oh dear. Poor Mr Bump.

For instance. One day when he was quietly walkingalong the beach minding his own business, he got his foot stuck in a bucket, and as he couldn't get it off, he had to walk around with it on his foot for hours.」

Oh dear. Poor Mr Bump.

For instance. Another time he was walking along the beach, he walked straight into a large hole that somebody had dug and he had to stay there all nightbecause he couldn't climb out on his own.

However, despite all these little accidents, Mr Bump enjoyed his holiday, and while he was there he had a splendid...」

Splendid means really good.

...he had a splendid idea about what sort of job he should do. It was quite the best idea Mr Bump had ever had.An absolutely splendid idea.」

Hmm...I wonder what it's going to be.

And now Mr Bump works happily for Mr Barley the farmer.

Mr Barley has a rather large apple orchard...」

An orchard is a place full of fruit trees, these are apple trees.

...on his farmand thats where Mr Bump works.」

Works on a farm?I wonder what he's going to be doing.

Mr Bump's job is picking apples but he doesn't use a ladderto climb up the tree to pick the apples like other apple pickers.

Oh no. Mr Bump has a much better way of picking apples than that! He just walks about!

And before long Mr Bump being Mr Bump walks into a tree. Bump!」

And down falls an apple. And Mr Bump catches it.

This makes the job of apple picking much easier and Mr Bump is very pleased about his new joband Mr Barley is very pleased about his new apple picker.」

So you seethe story of Mr Bump isn't such a sad story after all. And if you ever bump yourself, you know what to do, don't you?

Go and eat an apple picked by Mr Bump and then you won't feel your bump at all. You'll remember that the next time you have a bump, won't you?Good!」

So that's the story of Mr Bump.Oh dear. Everything he did, it went a bit wrong but in the end, he found the perfect job, didn't he? Because he was able to use his Mr Bump personality to knock down the apples. So he ended up with a good job.
