China releases 5-year plan on elderly care
'十四五'健康老龄化规划发布

China has released a five-year plan on elderly care for the 2021-2025 period, aiming to boost the health of the country's aging population. Over 78 percent of China's senior population has at least one chronic disease, and the number of incapacitated elderly individuals continues to grow, calling for more institutions, personnel, services and policies to meet their needs. 
《“十四五”健康老龄化规划》近日发布。规划说，我国78%以上的老年人至少患有一种以上慢性病，失能老年人数量将持续增加，需要更多健康老龄化机构、队伍、服务和政策的支持，来满足他们的需要。

The plan pledges efforts to improve the preventive health service system for elderly people, reducing or delaying the occurrence of disability and dementia. It underlines the accelerated development of barrier-free environments, elderly-friendly renovations of residential buildings, and the installation of automated external defibrillators at public venues.
规划提出，完善老年人预防保健服务体系，减少、延缓老年人失能（智）发生。加快无障碍环境建设和住宅适老化改造。推动在老年人集中场所安装自动体外除颤仪（AED）。

By the end of 2021, there were about 291 million students in school in China, the country's Ministry of Education said, as it released a series of education-related statistics on Tuesday. According to the ministry, in 2021, the country had a total of 529,300 schools and academic institutions of all levels. The ministry added that there were roughly 18.44 million full-time teachers in China by the end of 2021, a 500,000-some increase from 2020.

China to further optimize government services
国务院：加快推进政务服务标准化规范化便利化

China is looking to further optimize its government services, standardizing and normalizing the services and making them more convenient, according to a guideline released by the State Council. The guideline laid out major tasks in the area, including standardizing detailed lists of government service items and their implementation, and modifying the standard system for services. 
《国务院关于加快推进政务服务标准化规范化便利化的指导意见》日前公布。意见部署了推进政务服务事项和实施清单标准化、健全政务服务标准体系等重点工作任务。

It called for the normalization of services, including those related to examination and approval, those involving intermediaries, and online services, urging efforts to enhance the quality of intelligent, targeted and customized services. The guideline also stressed the need for efforts to improve the national integrated government services system, and enhance its data sharing capabilities.
意见提出，推进政务服务规范化，规范审批服务行为和中介服务，规范网上办事服务，提升智慧化精准化个性化服务水平。加强全国一体化政务服务平台建设统筹，提升数据共享能力。

Leading cause of trauma-related deaths in US

Firearm-related deaths are continuing their rapid rise in the US, with a new study finding they have overtaken car crashes as the leading cause of "years of potential life lost" due to trauma. The study found that suicides accounted for most of the deaths by firearms -- and those deaths had been increasing.

The number of suicides by firearm rose from fewer than 19,000 in 2009 to over 24,000 in 2018. Across the 10 years studied, white men made up the majority of suicide-related firearm deaths, with 4.95 million years of potential life lost. Meanwhile, the majority of homicide-related firearm deaths were among Black men, with 3.2 million years of potential life lost, the study found.
