Hours passed，and Tom wgke to a faint sound.
“Did you hear that？＂he said，waking
Becky.
They held their breath and listened.
They heard a very faint，distant shout. Tom responded immediately.They listened again .There was no answer.They waited and waited，but the sound was never heard
again.
Hours passed again，and the children fell asleep.They woke up feeling starving and exhausted.
Tom decided that it would be better to explore some of the corridors than to sit still.
He took a kite line from his pocket and tie it to a big stone.Then he led Becky through the corridors，unwinding the line as he moved along.He was turning a sharp corner when he saw，to his surprise，a human hand. It was holding a candle and appeared from
behind a rock！
Tom gave a loud shout，and instantly that hand was followed by the body it belonged to.It was Injun Joe＇s！Tom was paralyzed. However，the Spaniard ran away and disappeared out of sight. Tom wondered why Joe had not come over and killed him for testifying in court.
He realized that the echoes must have disguised his voice. Luckily，Becky had not seen Injun Joe，and Tom decided not to tell her. He told her he had only shouted for luck.”
Becky was too weak now to explore the corridors .Tom took her back to the spot with the spring of water. He untied the kite line from the large rock，and tied it around Becky's wrist.
“I’ll go and explore on my own，”he said.“You just rest. I’ll come back every now and then to tell you what I＇ve found.＂
Tom kissed her，with a choking sensation in his throat.He took the kite line in his hand and went down one of the passages on his hands and knees.
