This is what had happened to Tom and Becky at the picnic. They tripped along the murky aisles of the cave just like the rest of the company. Then they wandered down a sinuous avenue holding their candles. They drifted along talking, scarcely noticing that they were now in an unchartered part of the cave. Soon they came to a place where a little stream of water formed a small Niagara in gleaming and imperishable stone. Tom squeezed his small body behind it in order to illuminate it for Becky. He found that behind the falling water was a sort of steep natural stairway between narrow walls. Immediately he was seized by an ambition to be a discoverer.
Tom and Becky went this way and that, far down into the secret depths of the cave. They made marks on the walls as they went along so that they would know the way back. Then all of a sudden, hundreds of bats flew at them. Becky dropped her light, and Tom grabbed her by the arm and led her through one corridor after another until they were safe. Then Tom found a subterranean lake which stretched its dim length away until its shape was lost in the shadow. They sat down to rest. Soon, the deep stillness of the place became overwhelming.
