1.for / since

For is used for a period of time, and since is used to reference a specific point in time.

I’ve been waiting for three hours. I’ve been waiting since ten o’clock. 我已经等了三个小时了。我从十点钟就一直在等。

We’ve lived here for four years. We’ve lived here since 2008. 我们在这里住了四年了。我们从2008年起就住在这里了。

She’s been working there for six months. 她在那里工作了六个月。

She’s been working there since she graduated from college.  她大学毕业后就一直在那里工作。

2.as soon as / as long as

As soon as means “immediately after another event.”

We’ll call you as soon as we arrive.(if we arrive at 8:00, we’ll call you at 8:01)  我们一到就给你打电话。(如果我们8点到达,我们会在8点01给你打电话)

As long as means “for the period of time” or “on the condition that”:

I stayed awake for as long as I could. (period of time)  我尽可能长时间地保持清醒。(一段时间)

I’ll take the job as long as I have the freedom to work from home a few days a week. (condition) 只要我有每周在家工作几天的自由,我就接受这份工作。(条件)

Linking Words: Reasons

1.Because / Because of

The difference between these two words is that because is followed by a subject + verb, and because of is followed by a noun

• The game was canceled because of the rain.

• The game was canceled because it was raining.

因为下雨,比赛取消了

In spoken English, many people say ’cause as a short form of “because.”

2.Since / As

Since and as are more informal, and they are followed by a subject + verb.

• I’m going to bed at 10 PM since I need to get up early tomorrow.  我打算晚上10点睡觉,因为我明天要早起。

• I didn’t go to the gym today, as I had a lot of homework to do.  我今天没有去健身房,因为我有很多作业要做。
