There was a four-year-old child whose next-door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry."

有一个四岁的孩子，他隔壁的邻居是一位近期丧偶的老先生。

1） 凡是故事通篇用过去时

2） four-year-old三个词用hyphen连在一起做形容词

3） neighbor：邻居，跟很多的or结尾的词一样，neighbor是美国的拼法是or，如果是英国的拼法结尾是our，略有区别

4） gentleman：先生， “ladies and gentlemen”

5） elderly：年老的，比old听起来更客气一点

6） 把从句拆分一下可以有三个句子： An elderly gentleman had recently lost his wife. There was a 4-year-old child. His next-door neighbor was an elderly gentleman.

看到老先生在哭，小男孩走进他的院子里，爬到他的腿上坐着。

1）upon doing sth.：当…的时候

2）yard：院子，front yard是前院，back yard是后院
3）climb：爬

4）lap：大腿，laptop就是笔记本电脑

3. When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry."

当母亲问他对邻居先生说了什么时，这个小男孩说：“没什么，我只是帮他哭泣。”

1) 注意“when his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor” 的从句

2) "Nothing, I just helped him cry."：同理心最重要的是能够感同身受，当别人伤心的时候，不是说你别伤心了，而是说我很能体会到你的悲伤，我可以跟你一起悲伤，我可以帮助你哭泣。那么当你的感受被认可、被接纳的时候，你感觉就没有那么孤单了。

4. 从句：

从句就是一个句子充当另外一个句子的成分。怎么知道一个句子是从句呢？经常会有what，who，whose，where之类的词连接一个句子，当我们看到这样的词之后，就知道这是一个从句了。从句在汉语中不存在，所以学英语的时候是个难点。但当你的脑子里灌进了50个从句之后，本能地就知道该怎么说了，不用去把它当学科来研究。
