Blake - 4 - The Chimney Sweeper |

The poet contrasts an idyllic childhoodwith the reality of life for 18th-century chimney sweeps in London.

When my motherdied I was very young,

And my father soldme while yet my tongue

Could scarcely cry"weep! weep! weep! weep!"

So your chimneys Isweep and in soot I sleep.

There's little TomDacre, who cried when his head

That curled like alamb's back, was shaved, so I said,

"Hush, Tom!never mind it, for when your head's bare,

You know that thesoot cannot spoil your white hair."

And so he wasquiet, and that very night,

As Tom wasa-sleeping he had such a sight!

That thousands ofsweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned, & Jack,

Were all of themlocked up in coffins of black.

And by came anAngel who had a bright key,

And he opened thecoffins & set them all free;

Then down a greenplain, leaping, laughing they run,

And wash in ariver and shine in the Sun.

Then naked andwhite, all their bags left behind,

They rise uponclouds, and sport in the wind.

And the Angel toldTom, if he'd be a good boy,

He'd have God forhis father and never want joy.

And so Tom awoke;and we rose in the dark

And got with ourbags and our brushes to work.

Though the morningwas cold, Tom was happy and warm;

So if all do theirduty, they need not fear harm.

爸爸就把我送去卖掉;

一剃头就要哭个哇哇叫;

他睡着梦见奇迹出现;

他打开棺材,让他们个个解放;

他们升上云端,在风里玩耍;

带着袋子刷子把工上;

早晨虽冷,汤姆又快乐又暖和;
