Ladies and gentlemen, each year on or around the 25th of January, people all over the world come together to celebrate the life and works of Robert Burns and to brighten the dark days of January with a Burns supper.

女士们，先生们，每年1月25日前后，世界各地的人们会齐聚一堂，为罗伯特·彭斯的生平和作品庆祝，并用彭斯晚宴点亮一月黑暗的日子。

This year of course, the coming together has to be virtual rather than actual, but the warmth I'm sure will be nonetheless.

While Burns is Scotland's national poet, he is also an international figure whose poems have found a place in the hearts of people of different countries and different cultures for more than two centuries.

With Auld Lang Syne, he gave us words which have become a symbol of fellowship the world over, and never has that sense of connection been more important than now.

In many ways, Burns Night is a celebration like no other Scottish to the core, yet of international appeal for arguably no other poet in history has ever been so celebrated as Robert Burns.

In his short life of just 37 years, Burns wrote hundreds of poems and songs, chiefly in Scots which have not only stood the test of time, but which have inspired generations of people across the world to understand his abiding vision of human friendship and fellowship.

Burns certainly had many friends in his own lifetime, but he now has countless more. And I know we all count ourselves among them, separated by time from Caledonia bard perhaps, but not by sentiment, and united in our love for the land from which he drew his inspiration.

After Burns’ untimely death in 1796, the date of his birth, the 25th of January quickly became an occasion to celebrate the achievements of this genius who rose from humble circumstances in ashen, to create an incomparable literary legacy.

From as early as 1802, Burns clubs began to appear all over Scotland and soon members of the growing Scottish diaspora across the globe were proudly taking with them such classics as To a mouse, Tam O' Shanter and the timeless love songs Ae Fond kiss and My love is like a red red rose.

Over the two centuries since then, the essential elements of a Burns Supper - Addressing the Haggis, toasting the immortal memory and sharing his songs and poems with the aid of a dram have remained constant.

Crucial to maintaining this legacy is the work of the Robert Burns World Federation, which was formed in 1885 to educate, celebrate and promote the life and works of Robert Burns, especially to school children and to connecting more than 250 kindred Burns clubs across the world.

While we may not be able to gather in person this year, we can nonetheless pay tribute to the memory of Burns in the time-honored fashion.

As we do so, I can only thank the federation for its tireless work in protecting and promoting this priceless heritage and I send all of you wherever you may be my warmest possible greetings.

Now, let me just close by quoting some words of burns which are this year more meaningful than ever, as you remember the fellowship we have enjoyed in the past and which we pledge to continue in the future.
