A Tale of Two Cities《双城记》名言导读

查尔斯·狄更斯Charles Dickens（1812—1870），英国维多利亚时期最著名的小说家之一，一生创作了15部长篇小说，百余部中短篇小说、散文、游记等。主要作品有《大卫·科波菲尔》、《雾都孤儿》 《老古玩店》、《双城记》等，他的作品对英国文学产生了深远的影响。他的头像被印在英国钞票和邮票上，成为盎格鲁萨克森民族的文化符号。 
狄更斯在《双城记》中有一段经典的开场白，这段开场白运用了排比parallelism和对偶antithesis两种修辞手法，形象地概括了当时的社会状况和矛盾。对偶是指将一组相反意思的词句排列在一起的修辞手法，比如：the best of time, the worst of time等。《双城记》的写作以法国大革命为背景。“双城”指的是巴黎与伦敦。
