Ainsi, si vous leur dites: « La preuve que le petit prince a existé c’est qu’il était ravissant, qu’il riait, et qu’il voulait un mouton. Quand on veut un mouton, c’estla preuve qu‘on existe » elles hausseront les épaules et vous traiteront d’enfant !

Just so, you might say tothem: "The proof that the little prince existed is that he was charming,that he laughed, and that he was looking for a sheep. If anybody wants a sheep,that is a proof that he exists." And what good would it do to tell themthat? They would shrug their shoulders, and treat you like a child.

 要是你对他们说：“小王子存在的证据就是他非常迷人，他爱笑，想要一只羊。他想要一只小羊，这就证明他的存在。”他们一定都耸耸肩膀，把你当作孩子看待！

Mais si vousleur dites : « La planète d’où il venait est l’astéroïde B 612 » alors elles seront convaincues,et elles vous laisseront tranquille avec leurs questions. Elles sont comme ça.Il ne faut pas leur en vouloir. Les enfants doivent êtretrès indulgents envers les grandes personnes.

But if you said to them: "The planet hecame from is Asteroid B-612," then they would be convinced, and leave youin peace from their questions.

They are like that. One must not hold itagainst them. Children should always show great forbearance toward grown-uppeople.

但是，如果你对他们说：“小王子来自的星球就是小行星B612”，那么他们就会马上相信，也不会提出一大堆问题来和你纠缠。他们就是这样的。小孩子们对大人们应该宽容些，不要埋怨他们。

Mais, bien sûr, nous quicomprenons la vie, nous nous moquons bien des numéros ! J’aurais aimé commencer cette histoire à la façon des contes defées. 

But certainly, for us whounderstand life, figures are a matter of indifference. I would have liked tobegin this story in the fashion of a fairy-tale. 

 当然，对我们懂得生活的人来说，我们才不会在那些编号呢！我更愿意像讲童话故事那样来开始这个故事，

J’aurais aimé dire :

« Il était une fois un petitprince qui habitait une planète à peine plus grande que lui, et qui avait besoin d’un ami… » Pour ceux qui comprennent la vie, ça aurait eu l’air beaucoup plus vrai.

I would have loved to say:"Once upon a time there was a little prince who lived on a planetthat was scarcely any bigger than himself, and he needed a friend . . ."

For those who understandlife, that would have given a much greater air of truth to my story.

我其实想这样说：

 “从前呀，有一个小王子，他住在一个比他的身体大不了多少的星球上，他希望有一个朋友…”对懂得生活的人来说，这样说就显得更真实。

Car je n’aime pas qu’onlise mon livre à la légère. J’éprouve tant de chagrin à raconter ces souvenirs.

For I do not want any one toread my book carelessly. I have suffered too much grief in recalling thesememories. 

我可不喜欢人们轻率地读我的书。我在讲述这些往事时心情是很难过的。

Il y a six ans déjà que mon amis’en est allé avec son mouton. 

Si j’essaie ici de le décrire, c’est afin de ne pas l’oublier.

Six years have already passedsince my friend went away with his sheep. If I try to describe him here, it isto make sure that I shall not forget him.

我的朋友带着他的小羊已经离去六年了。我之所以在这里尽力把他描写出来，就是为了不要忘记他。

C’est triste d’oublierun ami. Tout le monde n’a pas eu un ami. Et je puisdevenir comme les grandes personnes qui ne s’intéressent plus qu’aux chiffres.

To forget a friend is sad.Not every one has had a friend. And if I forget him, I may become like thegrown-ups who are no longer interested in anything but figures . . .

忘记一个朋友，这太叫人悲伤了。并不是所有的人都有过一个朋友。再说，如果我把他忘记了，我也有可能变成那些大人那样，只对数字感兴趣。

C’est donc pour ça encore que j’ai acheté une boîte de couleurs et descrayons.  C’est dur de se remettre au dessin, à mon âge, quand on n’a jamais fait d’autres tentatives que celle d’un boa fermé et celle d’un boa ouvert, à l’âge de six ans !

It is for that purpose,again, that I have bought a box of paints and some pencils. It is hard to takeup drawing again at my age, when I have never made any pictures except those ofthe boa constrictor from the outside and the boa constrictor from the inside,since I was six.

也正是为了这个缘故，我买了一盒颜料和一些铅笔。象我这样年纪的人，重新再来画画，真费劲啊，而且除了六岁时画过闭着肚皮的和开着肚皮的巨蟒外，别的什么也没有尝试画过，！

J’essaierai, bien sûr, de faire desportraits le plus ressemblants possible. Mais je ne suis pastoutà fait certain de réussir. Un dessin va, et l’autre ne ressemble plus.

I shall certainly try to makemy portraits as true to life as possible. But I am not at all sure of success. Onedrawing goes along all right, and another has no resemblance to its subject.

当然，我一定要把这些画尽量地画得尽量逼真，但我自己也没有把握。一张画得还可以，另一张就不象了。

Je me trompe un peu aussisur la taille. Ici le petit prince est trop grand. Là il est trop petit. J’hésite aussi sur la couleur de soncostume. Alors je tâtonne comme ci et comme ça, tant bien que mal.

I make some errors, too, inthe little prince's height: in one place he is too tall and in another tooshort. And I feel some doubts about the color of his costume. So I fumble alongas best I can, now good and then bad.

还有小王子的身材，我画得有点不准确。在这个地方画得太大了些，另一个地方又画处太小了些。对他衣服的颜色我也拿不准。于是我就摸索着这么试试那么改改，画个大概。

Je me tromperai enfin surcertains détails plusimportants. Mais ça, il faudra me le pardonner. Mon ami ne donnait jamais d’explications. Il me croyait peut-être semblable à lui.

In some more importantdetails, I shall make mistakes. But that is something that will not be myfault. My friend never explained anything to me. He thought, perhaps, that Iwas like himself.

我很可能在某些重要细节上画错了。这就得请大家原谅我了。因为我的这个小朋友，从来也不加说明解释。他可能认为我同他是一样的。

Mais moi, malheureusement,je ne sais pas voir les moutons à travers les caisses. Je suis peut-être un peu comme les grandes personnes. J’ai dû vieillir.

But I, unfortunately, do notknow how to see the sheep through the walls of a box. Perhaps I am a littlelike the grown-ups. I must have grown old.  

可是，很遗憾，我却不能透过盒子看见小羊。我大概有点和大人们差不多了。我一定是变老了。
