Ah ! petit prince, j’ai compris, peu à peu, ainsi, ta petite vie mélancolique. Tu n’avais eu longtemps pour distraction que la douceur des couchers desoleil. 

Oh, little prince! Bit by bitI came to understand the secrets of your sad little life . . . For a longtime you had found your only entertainment in the quiet pleasure of looking atthe sunset.

啊！小王子，就这样，我逐渐懂得了你那忧郁的生活。过去相当长的时间里你唯一的乐趣就是观赏那夕阳西下的温柔景色。

J’ai appris ce détail nouveau, le quatrième jour au matin, quand tu

m’as dit :

– J’aimebien les couchers de soleil. Allons voir un coucher de soleil…

– Mais il faut attendre…

– Attendre quoi ?

– Attendre que le soleil secouche.

I learned that new detail on the morning ofthe fourth day, when you said to me:

"I am very fond of sunsets. Come, let usgo look at a sunset now."

"But we must wait," I said.

"Wait? For what?"

"For the sunset. We must wait until it istime."

这个新的细节，是我在第四天早晨知道的。你当时对我说道：

 “我喜欢看日落。我们去看一回日落吧！”

 “可是那得等…”

 “等什么？”

 “等太阳落山。”

Tu as eu l’air très surpris d’abord, et puis tu as ri de toi-même. Et tu m’as dit :

– Je me crois toujours chezmoi !

En effet. Quand il estmidi aux États-Unis, le soleil, tout le monde le sait, se couche sur la France.Il suffirait de pouvoir aller en France en une minute pour assister au coucherde soleil. 

At first you seemed to be very much surprised.And then you laughed to yourself. You said to me:

"I am always thinking that I am athome!"

Just so. Everybody knows that when it is noonin the United States the sun is setting over France. If you could fly to Francein one minute, you could go straight into the sunset, right from noon.

 开始，你显得很惊奇的样子，随后你笑自己的糊涂。你对我说：“我总以为是在我的家乡呢！”

 确实，大家都知道，在美国是正午时分，在法国，正好夕阳西下，只要在一分钟内赶到法国就可以直接看到日落。

Malheureusement la Franceest bien trop éloignée.

Mais, sur ta si petite planète, il te suffisait de tirer ta chaise dequelques pas. Et tu regardais le crépuscule chaque fois que tu le désirais…

Unfortunately, France is too far away forthat. But on your tiny planet, my little prince, all you need do is move yourchair a few steps. You can see the day end and thetwilight falling whenever you like . . .

可惜法国是那么的遥远。而在你那样的小行星上，你只要把椅子挪动几步就行了。这样，你便可以随时看到你想到看的夕阳…

– Un jour, j’ai vu le soleil se coucher quarante-trois fois !

Et un peu plus tard tu ajoutais :

– Tu sais… quand on est tellement triste on aime les couchers de soleil…

– Le jour des quarante-troisfois tu étais donc tellement triste ?

Mais le petit prince ne répondit pas.

"One day," you said to me, "Isaw the sunset forty-three times!"

And a little later you added:

"You know--one loves the sunset, when oneis so sad . . ."

"Were you so sad, then?" I asked,"on the day of the forty-three sunsets?"

But the little prince made no reply.

 “有一天，我看了四十三次日落。”

 过了一会儿，你又说：“你知道吗，当人们感到非常苦闷时，总是喜欢看日落。”

 “看了四十三次日落的那天，你很苦闷吗？”

 小王子没有回答。
