CEPT comes from theLatin verb meaning “take, seize.” Capture, which is what a captor has done to acaptive, has the same meaning. Captivate once meant literally “capture,” butnow means only to capture mentally through charm or appeal. But in some otherEnglish words this root produces, such as those below, its meaning is harder tofind.
CEPT来自拉丁语动词,意思是“夺取,抓住”。Capture(俘获),也就是劫持者(captor)对俘虏(captive)所做的事。Captivate 一度在字面上的意思是“捕获,俘获(capture)”,但现在的意识是“透过魅力或吸引力在精神上捕获”。但是在其他一些英语单词中,这个词根产生的意思就比较难找到了,比如下面的这些。
reception:(1)The act of receiving. (2) A social gathering where guests are formallywelcomed.
• Although thereception of her plan by the board of directors was enthusiastic, it was monthsbefore anything was done about it.
尽管董事会对她的计划反应热烈,但过了几个月才开始实行(她的计划)。
Reception is thenoun form of receive. So at a formal reception, guests are received or welcomedor “taken in.” A bad TV reception means the signal isn't being received well. When a new novel receives good reviews, we say it has met with a good critical reception. If it gets a poor reception, on the other hand, that's the same as saying thatit wasn't well-received.
Reception 是 receive 的名词形式。因此,在正式的招待会上,客人被接待或欢迎,或被“接纳(taken in)”。糟糕的电视接收(频道)意味着信号没有被很好地接收。当我们说一部新小说是“receive good reviews”,我们说这部小说受到好评。另一方面,如果说它“get a poor reception”,即是说它没有受到很好的评价。
intercept:Tostop, seize, or interrupt (something or someone) before arrival.
• The explosives hadbeen intercepted by police just before being loaded onto the jet.
就在将爆炸物装上飞机之前,警方截获了爆炸物。
Since the prefixinter means “between” (see INTER), it's not hard to see how intercept wascreated. Arms shipments coming to a country are sometimes intercepted, but suchinterceptions can sometimes be understood as acts of war. In football, soccer, and basketball, players try to intercept the ball as it's being passed by theother team.
由于其前缀 inter- 意思是“在……之间(between)”(参见 INTER),所以不难看出 intercept 是如何创建的。将武器运输到某个国家有时会被拦截,但这种拦截有时可以被理解为战争行为。在橄榄球、足球和篮球中,当球被对方传球时,球员试图拦截。
In years gone by,letters and documents being carried between officers or officials weresometimes intercepted when the carrier was caught; today, when thesecommunications are generally electronic, an intercepted e-mail isn't actuallystopped, but simply read secretly by a third party.
在过去的几年里,官员之间携带的信件和文件有时会在承运人被捕时被截获;今天,当这些通信通常是电子的时候,一封被截获的电子邮件实际上并没有被拦截,而只是被第三方秘密阅读。
perceptible:Noticeableor able to be felt by the senses.
• Her change inattitude toward him was barely perceptible, and he couldn't be sure he wasn'tjust imagining it.
她对他态度的改变几乎觉察不到,他对此也不确定(是真的改变了,还是只是他的幻想)。
Perceptible includesthe prefix per-, meaning “through,” so the word refers to whatever can be takenin through the senses. A perceptive person picks upminor changes, small clues, or hints and shades of meaning that otherscan't perceive, so one person's perception—a tiny sound, a slight change in theweather, a different tone of voice—often won't be perceptible to another.
Perceptible 包含前缀 per-,意思是“通过(through)”,所以这个词指的是任何可以通过感官吸收的东西。说一个人是 perceptive,即是说这个人能捕捉细微的变化、细小的线索、暗示和意义的细微差别、声音的不同音调,而其他人却觉察不到。
susceptible (1) Open to some influence; responsive. (2)Able to be submitted to an action or process.
• She impressedeveryone immediately with her intelligence, so they're now highly susceptibleto her influence and usually go along with anythingshe proposes.
她的智慧让每个人立刻印象深刻,所以他们现在很容易受她的影响,通常会同意她的任何建议。
With its prefixsus-, “up,” susceptible refers to something or someone that “takes up” orabsorbs like a sponge. A sickly child may be susceptible to colds, and anunlucky adult may be susceptible to back problems. A lonely elderly person maybe susceptible to what a con man tells himor her on the phone. And students are usually susceptible to the teaching of animaginative professor—that is, likely to enjoy and learn from it.
Susceptible 包含前缀 sus-,意思是“向上的(up)”,那么 susceptible 指某物或某人像海绵一样容易吸收/影响。一个体弱多病的孩子可能容易感冒(be susceptible to colds),而一个不幸的成年人可能易患背部疾病(be susceptible to back problems)。一个孤独的老人可能很容易受到电话诈骗。学生们通常容易受到富有想象力的教授的影响——也就是说,他们可能喜欢并从中学习。
