Some really unbelievable things have happened, since the former Prime Minister, Mr. Lane, suffered a crushing defeat in the recent elections.
former president = ex-president
former boss = ex-boss
former colleague = ex-colleague
crush v.
Last week, when I was on duty outside Mr. Lane’s house, a man called Patrick went up to me and asked me whether Mr. Lane lived there.【注意:go up to sb = go very close to sb】
I told him Mr. Lane no longer lived there as he had moved abroad since his defeat.
With a weird smile, the man went away.
Much to my surprise, the same guy came back the following day , and asked me the same question.
Although something smelt fishy about him, I still gave him the same answer, wondering whether that guy was forgetful or deaf.
With a mysterious smile, the man walked away.
One day later, I was so astonished to see the guy once again, who repeated exactly the same question.
This time I couldn’t help losing my temper , shouting “I told you over and over again. Mr. Lane has been defeated and has retired from political life.”
Unexpectedly, the man answered me in a very calm voice that he knew it but he just enjoyed hearing me say it.
It turns out that the man has been fanatically opposed to the policies of Mr.Lane’s radical progressive party.
【注意:opposed adj.反对的 oppose v.反对
我们可以用:be opposed to sth或oppose sth表示反对一件事】
It seems hard to believe, but sometimes politics can indeed drive people crazy.

How the US President is Elected
You may think that the President of the United States is just voted on by all the people in the country and then the person with the most votes wins. But it's not that simple.
The president is actually elected by something called the Electoral College. The members of the U.S. Electoral College are known as electors. In total, the Electoral College consists of 538 electors. Each state has a certain number of delegates in the Electoral College based on the population of the state.
In almost all states, if one candidate wins the popular vote in a state, then the candidate will win all the electoral votes for that state.
A candidate must receive at least 270 electoral votes to be elected to the office of President. Interestingly, it is possible for the winner of the popular vote to end up losing the election. For example,in the 2016 presidential election,Hillary Clinton won the popular vote but still lost the election.
Why? Because even though Hillary won more votes overall, a large number of them came from the same few states, like California and New York.
As a result , Hillary received fewer electoral votes than Donald Trump.
