1. How to tell a funny story ?

What makes a story really, truly funny?

SAP formula :

SAP refers to the three basic elements that hold jokes together.


S = Setup

A = Anticipation

P = Punchline

1)Setup

Describing the situation before launching straight into the joke is important, especially if the story is a personal experience.

2)Anticipation

The really memorable jokes create suspense and build up the audience’s expectations before surprising them.

3)Punchline

The punchline of a joke or funny story is its last sentence or phrase, which makes it funny.


That is the part of a joke that get remembered.

A punchline tends to be a short , snappy sentence that gives the joke a twist.

Setup:

The former Prime Minister suffered a defeat in the elections. Patrick has been a fanatical opponent of the ex-Prime Minister.

Anticipation:

Patrick went to the former Prime Minister's house three times in a row, and asked the policeman exactly the same question.  

Why did Patrick behave in such a weird way ?

The audience’s expectations to know the answer have been built up.

Punchline:

The mystery of Patrick’s abnormal behor was solved at the end of the story.

“I know , but I love to hear you say it.”

“The Rule of three” or ‘Comic Triple’

The Rule of Three in Comedy is repeating the same thing three times, but adding a twist (意外转折) to the last instance or step.  The first two steps create a pattern and build up the audience’s expectations but the third creates a surprise.

Examples:

There are three kinds of lies: [1]lies, [2]damned lies, and [3]statistics.  

-- Mark Twain.

Eighteen months ago, my wife and I traded our condo keys for house keys. [1] Our floor space doubled. [2] Our mortgage tripled. [3] Our income didn’t change at all.【变成四倍:quadruple】

Losing weight is simple: Eat less, exercise more and pay NASA to let you live in an anti-grty chamber.

“The Rule of three”可以________【听记2】

The rule of three is based on the fact that people tend to remember three things.  

【比如Three Musketeers,Three Little Pigs...】

So by repeating something three times or using the alliteration with three words, a quite ordinary speech becomes quite emotive.

例1:“Veni, vidi, vici”  (I came, I saw, I conquered) – Julius Caesar:


例2:“... government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”【Gettysburg Address is one of the best-known speeches in American history.】


例3:“This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning”  – Sir Winston Churchill

2.复习: 带连词的分词状语

课文回放:

“Though a little suspicious this time, the policeman gave him the same answer.”

=Though the policeman was a little suspicious this time , he gave him the same answer.

造句:

Although Alex was raised in the United States , he speaks Mandarin fluently.

= Although raised in the United States, Alex speaks Mandarin fluently.

Though I was exhausted by a whole day’s study, I felt excited because I had learned a lot.

= Though exhausted by a whole day’s study, I felt excited because I had learned a lot.

Leo is a quiet man, but if asked about his hometown , he will become very talkative.

= Leo is a quiet man, but if he is asked about his hometown , he will become very talkative.

Whenever talking about his hometown, Leo feels very proud.

= Whenever Leo talks about his hometown, he feels very proud.
