Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Museum of Air and Space.

It is my pleasure to introduce to you the Lancaster bomber, the most famous heavy bomber during World War Two.

The bomber in front of you looks in great shape , but it is hard to imagine that in 1963 this plane crashed on Wallis Island, a remote place in the South Pacific, a long way west of Samoa.

But how can the plane remain in such a great condition ?

Well, fortunately, the plane was not seriously damaged in the crash , and the wreck remained undisturbed until 1989, when the plane was rediscovered by accident in an aerial survey of this lonely island.

With most Lancaster bombers lost during the war, it was very rare that such a plane was still in reasonable condition , which made it worth rescuing .

it was very rare that...

reasonable =fairly good, but not very good还不错】

The plane was then taken apart and moved back to France, where it wasput back together again.

As you can see, the famous bomber is equipped with four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines.

The engine that saved Britain.】

But when the plane was being restored, only three of them needed to be rebuilt . Why?

Because the fourth engine was in perfect condition even 26 years after the crash, looking brand new.

【brand new = completely new】

It was unbelievable , wasn't it ? How could this happen ?

After a group of enthusiasts broke open the packing cases, their jaws dropped to the floor as they found that the fourth engine was sweet as honey.

It turned out that a colony of bees had turned the engine into a hive, so it was perfectly  preserved in beeswax .

Against all odds, the bomber survived not only the crash but also the test of time.

Interesting facts about the Lancaster Bomber

During World War II the Lancaster was the most successful bomber used by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force.

During the summer of 1940, offshore was an enemy held continent, and that enemy was bent on conquering the British Isles. The British army had been defeated in France, supplies from North America were being cut off by the enemy's fleet of submarines, and Britain was suffering heavy air attack.

Faced with this situation , British Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered, "The Navy can lose us the war, but only the Air Force can win it. Therefore our supreme(最大的)effort must be to gain overwhelming mastery in the air. The Fighters are our salvation(救星), but the Bombers alone provide the means of victory."

With this decision a massive effort was begun towards the production of heavy bombers and the training of aircrew(机组人员)to fly them. The Lancaster had speed, ceiling, and lifting power that no other aircraft of the day could match.

At 21 metres long and with a wingspan of 31 metres, the Lancaster was one of the largest bombers in WWII. Its maximum speed was 287 mph (462 km/h), the maximum ceiling height was 24,500 feet (7,470 metres), and its range was 2,530 miles (4,072 km).

Weighing 36,900 pounds empty, the Lancaster was capable of taking off with an additional 33,100 pounds of fuel and bombs; in other words it could almost carry its own weight again. Of the total of 7,377 Lancaster bombers built (430 of them in Canada), 3,932 were lost in action.

Today only 17 Lancaster bombers remain in complete form, eight of which are in Canada. Others are in as varied countries as Britain, France, America, New Zealand and Australia. Amazingly, two of the surviving Lancaster bombers are airworthy. One of the two is in Canada, and where is the other one?

The other one is located in the United Kingdom and flies regularly in air shows, including the one in honor of Queen Elizabeth's 80th birthday.
