Good morning, everyone, welcome to the space museum!

The giant telescope in this slide is called the Hubble Space Telescope, which was launched into space by NASA on April 20, 1990

It cost over a billion dollars, making it the most expensive telescope ever built.  【ever built = that has ever been built】

However, being costly doesn’t mean it is perfect.

In fact, there were problems with the Hubble from the very beginning.

Because of a flaw in its primary mirror, the quality of the pictures it sent us was much lower than expected, making scientists very disappointed.

NASA has now scheduled a repair mission to put the telescope right and will soon be sending up four astronauts in the space shuttle Endeavour to repair it.

How are the astronauts going to fix the Hubble?

With the Hubble already in space, this repair won’t come easy.

With the Hubble already in space =With the Hubble(being)already in space; This repair won’t come easy = The repair is no easy job】

According to the plan, a giant robot-arm from the Endeavour will grab the Hubble and hold it , while the astronauts take spacewalks and make the necessary repairs.

Some of you may ask: why bother putting a telescope in space when we have so many telescopes here on earth?

Well, that is because there is no interference above the earth’s atmosphere, so telescopes in space are able to collect much sharper images than the ones we have here on the ground.

【interference n.干扰sharp adj. If you say a picture is sharp, you can see all the details clearly.】

If the repair mission goes well, the Hubble will have an eagle eye in space.

It will soon be sending us the clearest images of the stars and distant galaxies that human beings have ever seen.

Those images will tell us a lot about the age and the size of the universe, and will solve many mysteries that have been baffling to scientists for centuries .

When you visit our space museum next year, we will have received thousands and thousands of fantastic pictures from the Hubble.

I am sure that you will be amazed by the breathtaking pictures.

Thanks for listening and I am looking forward to your visit next time.

Interesting Facts about the Hubble :

Hubble is 13.3 meters (43.5 feet) long—the length of a large school bus.

Hubble is about 24,000 pounds (10,886 kg).

Hubble can spot a night light on the surface of the Moon from Earth.

Hubble has peered back into the very distant past, to locations more than 13.4 billion light-years from Earth.

From the dawn of humankind to a mere 400 years ago, all that we knew about our universe came through observations with the naked eye.

Then Galileo turned his telescope toward the heavens in 1610. The world was in for an awakening.【注: be in for... = be certain to have sth. : They are in for a difficult time. 】

Saturn, we learned, had rings. Jupiter had moons.

That nebulous patch across the center of the sky called the Milky Way was not a cloud but a collection of countless stars. Within but a few years, our notion of the natural world would be forever changed. A scientific and societal revolution quickly ensued.

Hubble, the observatory, is the first major optical(光学)telescope to be placed in space, the ultimate mountaintop. Above the distortion of the atmosphere, far far above rain clouds and light pollution, Hubble has an unobstructed (没有阻碍)view of the universe.

Scientists have used Hubble to observe the most distant stars and galaxies as well as the planets in our solar system. Hubble's launch and deployment in April 1990 marked the most significant advance in astronomy since Galileo's telescope.

Thanks to Hubble, our view of the universe and our place within it has never been the same.
