Stargazers(观星爱好者)share images of the super blood wolf moon

(CNN)Sky gazers(天文观测者) were treated to a rare lunar eclipse(月蚀) known as a superblood wolf moon on Sunday night, in which sunlight passingthrough(穿越)Earth's atmosphere lit the celestialbody(天体) in a dramatic fashion and turned it red.

Watchersin North and South America, parts of Europe and western Africa, who were luckyenough to have clear skies, saw a total lunar eclipse -- but eastern Africa andAsia observed a partial eclipse.

Hundredsof people came out late on Sunday night or early Monday morning to witness(目睹,见证) the event, capturingimages of the super blood wolf moon and sharing it on Twitter.

CNN'sGeorge Engels shared images of the lunar eclipse(月蚀) taken byhis father William on an iPhone between 2.25 and 2.40 am from La Carolina, 12miles west of Maldonado(马尔多纳多), Uruguay(乌拉圭). Themoon was in perfect alignment(精确对准) with thesun and Earth, with the moon on the opposite side of Earth from the sun.

Earth cast(投射)two shadows on the moon during theeclipse. The penumbra(半影) is the partial(局部的)outer shadow, and the umbra(暗影)is the full, darkshadow.

Whenthe full moon moved into Earth's shadow, it darkened, but did not disappear(消失). At the peak of the spectacle(壮观奇景), sunlight passedthrough Earth's atmosphere(地球大气层) and litthe moon, making it appear to glow red.

Thishappens because blue light undergoes(经受) stronger atmospheric scattering(大气散射), so redlight will be the most dominant(主要的) colorhighlighted as sunlight passes through our atmosphere and casts it on the moon.
