Chapter 5

Commodore Norrington and Governor Swann leaned over (俯身于) the parapet (护墙) and considered jumping off the cliff to save Elizabeth, but the dive (跳入水中) would have meant certain death. “The rocks, sir! It’s a miracle (奇迹) she missed them!” said a soldier, holding Norrington back.

Elizabeth had just been chatting with (与…聊天) the commodore. He had told her that now that he had received his promotion, he wished to find a fine woman to be his wife. “You have become a fine woman,” he had said, hinting (暗示) strongly that he wished to marry her.

Elizabeth had gasped (喘气) and told him she couldn’t breathe, but not because of Commodore Norrington’s suggestion that she become his wife. The heat of the midday sun and the tightness (紧) of her dress had overcome (使受不了) her, and she had fallen over the wall of the fort in a faint (昏厥), tumbling (摔倒) toward the water.

Commodore Norrington and Governor Swann rushed down the cliff to the harbor.

Captain Jack Sparrow eyed (看,目睹) the whole event impatiently (焦急地). “Aren’t you going to save her?” he asked the two guards as Elizabeth splashed (溅落) into the water.

Both men looked at Jack blankly (茫然地). “I can’t swim,” confessed one. Apparently, neither could the other, who just shook his head.

“Sailors,” huffed (恼怒地说) Jack, resenting (对…感到愤怒) the delay (耽搁) in stealing the Interceptor. “Fine,” he said. He handed his belt and pistol (手枪) to them. “Don’t lose those.”

Jack dove into the water and swam toward Elizabeth, who was gasping for air (大口喘气) as she disappeared below the surface. She was sinking slowly in the dark water, her velvet gown surrounding her like a cloud, when Jack’s arm suddenly grabbed her around the waist.

Jack was a mighty (强有力的) swimmer, but he couldn’t bring Elizabeth to the surface. He quickly realized that the weight (重量) of Elizabeth’s dress was pulling them down. He ripped at (撕开) the buttons until the heavy, water-soaked (浸满水的) dress fell away, and the two of them floated to the surface.

The guards helped Jack haul (拉) Elizabeth onto the dock. “She’s not breathing,” said one of the guards as he put his cheek to her nose and mouth.

“Move,” commanded Jack, who suddenly took a knife from the guard’s sheath (鞘) and leaned over Elizabeth.

Then, to the shock of both guards, Jack took the blade (刀) and slit (切开) Elizabeth’s corset down the middle. Elizabeth immediately began coughing (咳嗽) and sputtering (喷水).

“I never would have thought of (想到) that,” said the guard.

“Clearly you’ve never been to Singapore (新加坡),” said Jack with a devilish (邪恶的) smile. He was about to ask Elizabeth how she was doing when he suddenly felt a blade at his neck.

“On your feet (站起来)!” said Commodore Norrington to Jack. The pirate thought of trying to explain his position (处境), but he knew it looked bad.

“Elizabeth! Are you all right?” asked Governor Swann.

“Yes, yes, I’m fine,” Elizabeth said to her father.

As Captain Norrington tightened his grip (抓牢) on Jack, he noticed a brand (烙印) on the stranger’s inner wrist (手腕): the letter P, and above it, a tattoo (刺青) of a small bird in flight (飞行中的) across the water. “Well, well ... a pirate,” remarked (谈论) Norrington. “Jack Sparrow, isn’t it?” Norrington’s guards drew (拔) their pistols.

“Captain Jack Sparrow, if you please,” answered Jack.

“I don’t see your ship ... Captain,” Commodore Norrington sneered (讥笑).

“He said he’d come to commandeer one,” said one of the guards, handing over (交出) Jack’s belt and pistol. Norrington examined the pirate’s possessions (所有物) and snorted (用鼻子哼). He was unimpressed with Jack’s pistol, which held only a single shot (子弹), and his compass (指南针), which didn’t point north.

“You are without a doubt (毫无疑问) the worst pirate I have ever heard of,” Norrington taunted (嘲讽).

“Ah, but you have heard of me,” Jack said, smiling.
