Instagram cracksdown（取缔，镇压）on fakelikes, follows and comments

New York (CNN Business) Instagram is thelatest social media platform to crack down on fake likes and comments.

On Monday, the company began removing"inauthentic（不真实的）" likes, follows and comments fromaccounts that use third-party apps that falsely inflate（膨胀的） popularity（受欢迎程度）. In a blog post, Instagram said this ispart of a greater effort to maintain an "authentic（可信的，真实的）"platform.

The move comes as social media sites,including Instagram's parent company Facebook, face increasing criticism overthe presence（存在） of trolls（钓鱼贴）, fake newsand misinformation on their platforms. Earlier this year, Twitter�purged（净化）�tens of millions of accounts from users'follower counts. These accounts were previously locked due to suspicious（可疑的） activity.

Instagram said it built machine learningtools to help detect and remove fake popularity boosting. Users can sign up forsuch services by providing their username and password in exchange for morelikes and followers. These services use bots（机器人）that leavecomments and like posts on real Instagram accounts, often for a fee（收费）.

Accounts that use such third-party appswill receive a message notifying（通知） theminauthentic likes, follows and comments have been removed from their posts andaccount. Users will be prompted（提示） to changetheir password and revoke（撤回） access for thepopularity boosting service in order to secure their account. Instagramacknowledges some users may have unintentionally（无意地） shared their log-in information withthird-parties.

An Instagram spokesperson declined to givemore details about how the tools identify this behavior, beyond saying spam（刷屏） activity looks different than normal activity onInstagram.

The company said accounts that continueusing these third-party services to boost（增加） their audience "may see theirInstagram experience impacted," according to the blog post. For example,those users could see their number of followers drop as a result.
