犹太新年与中学开放日第二周

犹太新年和赎罪日。移民国家对各国传统的尊重如何在放假上体现？家长开放日会收到哪些家长必知？

Hello，my friends, welcome to Chronicles of my school. Last week was the 2nd week since school started. However, school was closed on 9/10 and 11 th to observe Rosh Hashanah，In fact, on this Wednesday 9/19 school will be closed again for Yom Kippur。Rosh Hashanah 是犹太人的新年，Yom Kippur 则是新年后的第10天，是赎罪日，犹太传统要节食25小时,是犹太社区里最神圣的一天。纽约长岛有非常浓重的犹太人的影响力，所以很多学校的设置校历 School Calendar 时会尊重他们的习俗。当然了，我们华人的春节 Spring Festival经过多年努力，也被批准成为了本校区的假期。So this was a short week, only 3 days.

Lindsay’s school had an important event during the evening of Wednesday for school open house. 学校开放日提供了一个家长感受孩子学校生活的机会。家长们会事先收到自己孩子的一天课表，然后就跟着时间表转教室，看看教室的陈设，听听老师的自我介绍self-introduction, 和課程內容，syllabus， 以及評分方式，grading system。Teachers also provided their contact information and the help hours. For those students that need help outside regular class hours, you could meet teacher either before school or after school or at lunch time. THis is normally shared at the beginning of each school year. All teachers need to provide help hours including art and music.

This year, 7th Grader Lindsay has taken English, Math, Social Science, Science, Orchestra, Art, French, Gym, and Technology. Every class takes 40 minutes.  THere are only 4 minutes break for students moving to the next class in between. Everyday school bus picks her up at 7:38 in front of her house. School starts at 8:05 and ends at 3PM. But she comes back much later than that as she signed up cross country training.
