Helmut Schmidt, the chancellor of West Germany between1974 and 1982, died, aged 96. A pioneer of European and transatlantic co-operation, his brainy, abrasive style made enemies. The highly pragmatic Social Democrat once said that anyone with a vision should “go and visit a doctor”. A notorious chain-smoker and accomplished pianist, he became an influential commentator after leaving office.
