Good afternoon, you are listening to MT English. I’m Joe. This is a podcast, the continues of the Black history series. Today, I’m gonna continue in the way of music and how does it shaped by black history.

So we can enjoy some of the music who play today. Frederick Douglass continues to discuss music. “I did not, when a slave, understand the deep meaning of those rude and apparently incoherent（不连贯的） songs.I was myself within the circle; so that I neither saw nor heard as those without might see and hear. They told the tale of the world which was altogether beyond my feeble（虚弱的，衰弱的） comprehension .They breed the prayer and complaint to souls boiling over（沸腾溢出;到了爆发点）with bitterest（最愤愤不平的） anguish（痛苦）.Every term was testimony(证词） against slavery（奴隶制度） and the pray to god for deliverance（解脱；解救） from chase”.

That was reading from the narrative（记叙） of the life for Frederick Douglass.So here is a song now by Mahalia Jackson who was a civil right（公民权力）activist（积极分子）but more famous for her singing. She was also a friends of Martin Lurther King and led a great life . And she was a gospel singer.

And a whole series is podcast could be creative just focusing on her. She was a great character. But here is one of her songs calledSteal Away.Steal Away in English means not necessarily something to do with stealing but to run away, which is incredibly(很；极其) importance statement in the song which comes from the legacy（遗产）of slavery .Even though it says steal away to Jesus maybe in fact perches（栖身之处） and applying is also to run away from slavery, escape from slavery.

整个电台系列的最大的亮点就是聚焦于她。她是一名伟大的人物。她有一首名为“悄悄离去”的歌曲。在英文里，“Steal Away”的意思与“偷”并没有直接联系，它在这里的意思是逃跑。这首歌是奴隶制度的遗产，而“steal away”是这首歌曲里极其重要的表达。尽管歌词里提到：逃跑到耶稣那里可能实际上是指（奴隶们一直在逃亡生涯中度过）他们渴望得到栖身之处，同时，applying在这里也可以理解为渴望逃离奴役。
