Open-plan offices suck
For the first time, scientists have measured what actually happens with face-to-face interactions when employees start to work at an open-plan office - and their results show these modern workspaces are not as collaborative as you'd think.
Instead of spending more time "collaborating" with co-workers in the sprawling new space where everyone could see them, people got their heads down and tried to preserve their privacy any way they could (like, with huge headphones).
It appears that being forced into a more open-plan environment can make people switch from chatting to others in person to sending an email or using instant messaging instead.
Wounded refuses ambulance
A 45-year-old woman was walking off Boston's Orange Line train at Massachusetts Avenue when she lost her footing and plunged down the gap, giving her a deep cut that went right down to the bone.
Her fellow passengers helped push the train to the side and free her, but even as she thanked them, shaking and weeping from the pain, she begged them not to call an ambulance because it cost too much.
"Do you know how much an ambulance costs?" she said. "It's $3,000," she said. "I can't afford that." The woman's heartbreaking pleas have reignited the debate around healthcare in the US, with many branding it "barbaric" that someone should be forced to choose between life and debt.
"It is absolutely disgraceful that someone has to worry about the cost of an ambulance in a situation like that. My thoughts are with her," said Twitter user Yalina.
Creative self-defense gadget
South Korean telecommunications operator SK Telecom rolled out a self-defense device that looks like a harmless lipstick. The smart gadget is 8 cm long and has a diameter of 0.8 cm.
While it looks exactly like a lipstick on the outside, it definitely isn't designed for makeup. When you take off the cap, it will immediately send out an alarm of 90 decibels (dB) and also send a message to the police.
SK Telecom also claimed the device can report the user's location to five previously installed emergency contacts. Moreover, the "lipstick" can work as a recorder for three minutes after it's triggered.
This function allows it to collect evidence that can be used by the authorities at a later date. SK Telecom released the product on Thursday for 25,000 won and believes that the highly portable, inconspicuous device will do well on the market.
