The fifth planet was the smallest ofall. There was just enough room for a street lamp and a lamplighter. When he lithis lamp, it is as if he was bringing one more star to life, or one moreflower. When put out his lamp, that sent the flower or the star to sleep. Thelittle prince thought it was fine occupation and therefore truly useful. But itwas a terrible job. Year by year the planet was turning faster andfaster.

"Good morning. Why have you justput out your lamp?"

"Orders. Good morning."

"What orders are those?"

"To put out my street lamp. Goodevening."

And he lit his lamp again.

"But why have you just lit yourlamp again?"

"Orders."

"I don't understand."

"There's nothing yo understand.Orders are orders. Good morning."

"It's a terrible job I had. Itused to be reasonable enough. I put the lamp up mornings. and lit it out afterdark. I had the rest of the day for my own affairs, and rest of the night forsleeping, and orders haven't changed."

"Which means?"

"Which means that now that planetreverses once a minute. I don't haven't an instant of rest. I lightmy lamp and turn it off once every minute. Good evening."

The little prince watched him growing fonder and fonder of this lamplighter who was so faithful toorders. He wanted to help his friend.

"You know, I can show you a wayto take a rest whenever you want to. "

"What good does that do me? Whenthe one thing in life I want to do is sleep."

"Then you're out of luck. "

"Uh huh."

And he continued on his journey. Thelittle prince thought the lamplighter was the only one who didn't strike him asridiculous. Because he is the only one thinking of something besideshimself.
