Marsyas was a satyr from Phrygia. He came upon a flute that Athena had cast away and began playing. He decided that the flute produced the loveliest sound he had ever heard and was willing to bet that the flute's music was sweeter than even Apollo's. He was so sure of its success that he outright challenged Apollo to a musical contest.
