The Little Match Girl
It was terribly cold and nearly dark on the last evening of the old year, and the snow was falling fast. In the cold and the darkness, a poor little girl, with bare head and naked feet, roamed through the streets.
She carried a quantity of matches in an old apron, and she held a bundle of them in her hand. No one had bought anything of her the whole day, nor had anyone given her a single penny.
Tired and hungry, she crouched down in a corner between two houses. She drew one match from the bundle and struck it against the wall. It gave a warm, bright flame, like a little candle, as she held her hand over it.
In the flame, she seemed to see a table with a delicious roast goose on it. The goose was so near that she could almost taste it. But then the match went out, and there was nothing but the cold, dark wall before her.
She struck another match. This time, she saw a Christmas tree, beautifully decorated with lights and ornaments. It was the most beautiful tree she had ever seen. But again, the match burned out, and the vision disappeared.
With the last match, she saw her dear grandmother, who had passed away, smiling and reaching out to her. "Grandma!" she cried. Just then, the match went out, and the little girl was left alone in the cold and darkness.
The next morning, people found the little girl frozen to death in the corner, but her face was still peaceful and she seemed to be smiling.
