The Little Match Girl

It was terribly cold and nearly dark on the last evening of the old year, and the snow was falling fast. In the cold and the darkness, a poor little girl, with bare head and naked feet, roamed through the streets.

Tired and hungry, she crouched down in a corner between two houses. She drew one match from the bundle and struck it against the wall. It gave a warm, bright flame, like a little candle, as she held her hand over it.

In the flame, she seemed to see a table with a delicious roast goose on it. The goose was so near that she could almost taste it. But then the match went out, and there was nothing but the cold, dark wall before her.

With the last match, she saw her dear grandmother, who had passed away, smiling and reaching out to her. "Grandma!" she cried. Just then, the match went out, and the little girl was left alone in the cold and darkness.
