The Six Swans Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm A king was once hunting in a great forest, and he chased his prey so eagerly that none of his men could follow him. As evening approached he stopped and looked around, and saw that he was lost. He looked for a way out of the woods, but he could not find one. Then he saw an old woman with a bobbing head who approached him. She was a witch."My dear woman," he said to her, "can you show me the way through the woods?" "Oh, yes, your majesty," she answered, "I can indeed. However, there is one condition, and if you do not fulfill it, you will never get out of these woods, and will die here of hunger." "What sort of condition is it?" asked the king."I have a daughter," said the old woman, "who is as beautiful as anyone you could find in all the world, and who well deserves to become your wife. If you will make her your queen, I will show you the way out of the woods." The king was in love with the witch's daughter at first sight, so he agreed to her condition.

The old woman led the king out of the forest. When they arrived home, she called her daughter. The king saw that she was really as beautiful as the old woman had said. He married her and took her back to his kingdom. The princess and the king lived together for a long time and had six children, five sons and a daughter. A few years later, the king went hunting in the forest again. When he returned to the palace, his wife was sitting there knitting for their children."How was your day, dear?" she asked him. "Oh, I had a great day," he replied, "but I saw something strange in the forest." "What was it?" asked the queen. "I saw six swans with golden wings flying in the sky." "That's nothing strange," said the queen, "you must be tired and your eyes are playing tricks on you." The king didn't say anything more, but he felt very uneasy.

The next morning, the king woke up and thought about the six swans again. He decided to go back to the forest to see if he could find them. He took his wife and children with him. They walked in the forest for a long time until they finally saw the six swans. They really had golden wings and were flying gracefully in the sky. The children were very excited and ran towards the swans to touch them. But as they got closer, the swans suddenly turned into six handsome young men."Who are you?" asked the king. "We are your sons," they replied, "we were cursed by an evil witch and turned into swans. Only when we find someone who truly loves us and sheds a tear for us, can we turn back into humans." The king was shocked to hear this. He realized that his wife didn't really love him because she hadn't shed a tear for his sons. He decided to divorce her and send her back to her family. Then, he went back to the palace with his children and they lived happily together. However, the king still felt uneasy in his heart. He felt that he owed his sons too much. So, he decided to go back to the forest to look for the six swans and see if there was a way to lift the curse. He walked for a long time and finally found a small hut. Standing outside the hut was an old woman, who was a witch."What are you doing here?" asked the witch. "I'm looking for a way to lift the curse on my sons," replied the king. "You can find six nettle plants," said the witch, "weave them into a dress and have your sons wear it. When they put on the dress, they will turn back into humans." The king was overjoyed. He thanked the witch and started looking for nettle plants. He searched for a long time and finally found six of them. He brought them back to the palace and编织 them into a dress. He gave the dress to his sons and when they put it on, they really turned back into humans. They were all very happy and hugged their father, thanking him.

Since then, the king and his children have lived happily together and never encountered any trouble again.
