"Tom!Tom!" There was no answer.

“汤姆！汤姆！”没有人回答。

"Whereis that boy? Tom!" Aunt Polly looked under the bed but she only found thecat.

"Tom!"she cried.

Thenshe heard a noise behind her.

Asmall boy ran past and she stopped him with her hand.

Theold lady looked and Tom ran away.

Tomlived in the small village of St Petersburg with his Aunt Polly, his brotherSid and his sister Mary.

Thesummer evenings were long, and in the evenings Tom liked walking around thevillage.

Tomwas surprised because he did not see new people often.

"He'sgot shoes, a new shirt and a tie. And it's not Sunday," Tom thought."My clothes are old and ugly."

Tomlooked at him and the big boy looked at Tom.

ThenTom pushed the boy and the boy pushed Tom.

Benwatched Tom.

Hepainted slowly and carefully. He often stopped and moved back from the fence.

Benwas suddenly interested in the fence and said, "Let me paint a little,Tom."

WhenAunt Polly saw the beautiful white fence she was very happy.
