中英文对照

转述场景：在英语角上，你碰到了一个老外，你们聊起语言学习的趣事。你想到你的一个英国朋友Oliver,他曾经在法国的一次有趣经历。

于是你聊起了Oliver的故事。

我的一个英国朋友给我讲过他的一个有趣经历。

My English friend Oliver once told me about his funny experience.

去年，他在法国南部驾车旅行。

Last year, he was driving in the south of France.

在他游览过一个小村庄之后，他继续自己的旅程驶向下一个城镇。

After he had visited a small village, he continued his journey to the next town.

当他正在路上驾车行驶，Oliver看到了一个年轻人正向他招手。

As he was driving on the road, Oliver saw a young man waving to him.  

所以，他停下了车，年轻人向Oliver请求搭车。

So he stopped his car, and the young man asked Oliver for a ride.

Oliver答应了他的请求，于是这个人就上了车。

Oliver accepted his request and the man got into the car.

这个年轻人刚一上车，Oliver就用法语跟他打招呼，而这个年轻人同样用法语回答。

As soon as the he had hopped in the car, Oliver greeted him in French and the young man replied in the same language.

但是其实，Oliver除了类似你好这样的法语之外，几乎不会法语。

But actually, Oliver knew very little French except for a few words, such as “bonjour”and “salut”.

在整个旅途中Oliver和他的乘客都没有说话。

Neither Oliver nor his passenger spoke during the journey.  

【neither A nor B，表示A和B都不: Neither my sister nor I likes horror movies.】

我肯定Oliver一定在想：我的法语太差劲了，我无法和他对话。

I am sure Oliver must have been thinking : My French is so poor that I can’t talk to him.  

他们就要到达目的地了，那年轻人令人意外地开口了，语速很慢地说：“你会讲英文吗？”

They had nearly reached the destination, when the young man unexpectedly said, very slowly, “Do you speak English?”   

Oliver很快就了解到，这个年轻人也来自英格兰。

As Oliver soon learned , the young man was also from England.

我猜那个年轻人一定也想知道是否Oliver也是英国人，因为Oliver说法语时带着浓重的英国口音。

I guess the young man must have been wondering if Oliver was English too, because Oliver spoke French with a strong English accent.

文化拓展 

入乡随俗 

这个故事让我想起我的一次亲身经历：很久以前，有一次我和家人去澳大利亚旅行，我们在布里斯班转车，我们错过了一列火车。我很着急，于是冲到一个站台工作人员面前，用无比快速的英文询问关于列车的信息。这个工作人员是个亚洲面孔的大叔，他也用流利的英文回答我的问题。

当知道下一班列车马上来了的时候，我对着我的家人用中文大喊：“快点，车来了。”这个时候，这位亚洲大叔竟然开口用中文给我说：“原来是同胞啊，我听你英文这么流利，以为你不懂中文。别着急，下一班火车马上来了。”我们相视大笑，原来这个大叔是中国的移民。见到老乡格外开心，但一开始我们都以为对方不会说中文。

But in the first place, we both thought the other person didn’t speak mandarin.

俗话说，入乡随俗。

Do in Rome as the Romans do.

在外国，尊重别人的语言和文化是一个特别重要的事。

It is of vital importance to respect local culture and people.

而说当地的语言就是对当地人和当地文化的尊重。

Speaking local language is a way of showing your respect to local culture and people.

记得Facebook的创始人Mark Zuckerberg曾在2010年开始学习中文，4年后访问清华大学时，全程1小时坚持用中文演讲，虽然他的中文带有浓重的美国口音，但是这样的方式让他在中国圈粉无数。他实际在传递一个信息：

I can speak your language because I know your culture and respect your culture.

所以，语言不仅仅是一种沟通工具，也是文化和情感的载体。

Language is not just a tool of communication，but a carrier of culture and emotions.

我想起自己的一个美国同学，他中文非常好，甚至我们讲的中文笑话，他也能听懂。他经常去中国的街头巷尾和普通人聊天，甚至一起和大爷大妈一起跳广场舞。由于他跨文化交际的能力，和对中国语言和文化的了解，让他MBA毕业时，获得了一份连中国同学都很难获得的国内某顶尖公司的高薪工作。学习一门语言就是打开一扇窗户。

对我们很多同学而言，学习英文就是打开世界的窗户。

English is the window to the world.

在国际交流的场合，大家来自世界各地，那么使用国际通用的语言英语就变得很重要，因为你必须让大家都听懂。

比如：我记得在中欧国际工商学院读MBA的时候，有个不成文规定就是，公共场合必须说英文。我的同学来自世界各地，有一次两个南美同学在讨论案例，他们说的是西班牙语，看到我来了，立刻改成英文。

有一次，我应邀在一个中国MBA同学为主的活动中进行演讲，但现场有一个来自美国的朋友，我先问他Do you speak Mandarin?他说：Just a little bit.那我就会全程用英文演讲，因为在场的中国MBA同学都能听懂英文。

Even when there is one person who doesn’t speak mandarin, I will speak English to make it easy for everybody to understand. On such occasions, speaking English shows your respect to everyone.
