The night skies above northern China came alive with a rare aurora display thanks to solar geomagnetic storms – and more could be on the way.

Sightings of the aurora borealis were caused by powerful disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field.

"The solar activity will be so frequent and intense that the probability of auroral outbursts will be higher than in normal years," said Xiu Lipeng, a member of the Chinese Astronomical Society.
