To catch the snakes抓蛇
Now I had not thought that I would have to go down into the pit with snakes in order to catch them，And so I was wearing the wrong sort of clothes，I explained this to my friend，And he very kindly lent me his trousers and shoes，Which were quite thick and strong，So， as I would think of no more excuse，they tied the rope round my waist and stared to lower me into the pit.
Just before I landed at the bottom I put up and told my friends to stop lowering me，I wanted to examine the ground that I was going to land on，To make sure there were no snakes in the way，The area being clear，I shouted to them to lower away，And at that moment two things happened.
First ，the light went out， secondly ，one of the shoes which I had borrowed from my friend，And which were too large for me，Came off，So there was I， standing at the bottom of a ten-foot-deep pit，With no light and one shoe on one foot，Surrounded by seven or eight deadly Gaboon snakes，I had never been more frightened，I had to wait in the dark，Without daring to move，While my friend pulled the lamp out，Relighted it and lowered it into the pit again，With plenty of light and both shoes on，Felt much braver，And sed about the task of catching the snakes，This was really simple enough.
I had a forked stick in my hand and with this i came near each reptile，Pinned it down with the fork and then picked in up by the back of the neck，And put it into my snake bag，What I had to watch out for was that while I was busy catching one snake，Another might move round behind me and i might step back on it，However it all passed off without accident，And at the end of half an hour I had caught eight of the Gaboon snakes.

现在我认为我没必要进入蛇坑去抓蛇，所以我没有穿合适的工作服装，我向朋友解释了这一点，他很友好的把他的裤子和鞋子借给了我，那身衣服又厚又结实，所以我认为再也没有什么借口了，他们在我的腰间系好绳子，开始慢慢的把我送进坑里。
在到达坑底前，我提出来停止下降，我想检查一下，我将着陆的地方，为了确认在路上没有蛇，降落的地点没有蛇，我向他们喊，叫他们继续往下放，恰在此时，两件事情发生了。
第一件事，灯灭了，第二，我向朋友借来的两支对于我来讲太大的鞋，有一只掉了，所以我站在10英尺深的坑底，没有灯，一只脚没有鞋，被7到8只致命的眼镜蛇包围着，我从来没有这么害怕过，我不得不在黑暗中等着，一动不敢动，这时，我的同事正把灯拉上去，重新点亮再放下来。
有了充足的灯光，脚上穿着两只鞋，勇气又恢复了，着手开始抓蛇，这当然是很简单的事了。
我手中握着有插头的棍子，用它我可以接近每一条蛇，用叉子叉住，然后掐住脖子放到我的蛇袋子里，我所需要注意的是，当我忙于抓一条蛇时，要小心身后的另一条，我也可能后退时踩上它，然而没有发生任何意外，一切都很顺利。半个小时以后，我抓住了八条眼镜蛇。
