Daily trips in "flying cars", the stuff of sci-fi movies, are about to become commonplace.

California-based electric aircraft maker Joby Aviation said it will invest $500 million to build a new factory in SAMA Dayton, Ohio, for the mass production of air taxis. The company expects to deliver 500 electric flying taxis a year and plans to fly passengers as early as 2025.

Joby's "taxi" can accommodate a pilot and four passengers. It can travel up to 200 miles per hour and 150 miles on a single charge. It is powered by six electric motors and will take off and land vertically. The company says it has conducted more than 1,000 test flights so far. In most cities, its noise is barely audible.

Joby said that with just a few clicks on the app, it will be as easy for consumers to book a flying taxi as it is to use other ride-hailing apps.

"Flying cars" are entering the public eye in recent years, but they also face a number of challenges, including a strict flight-qualification application, safety concerns, aircraft battery-capacity limitations and pilot shortages.

In addition to Joby, China's XPENG, the UK's Vertical Aerospace, Germany's Volocopter, etc., are also developing their own "flying cars".
