2023 could be hottest year on record! Be careful of heatstroke

The latest scorching heat wave has been burning the northern part of China over the past week with high temperatures in multiple places surpassing 40℃, and meteorologists predict this year could be the hottest or second-hottest on record, partly due to the El Nino phenomenon.

Heatstroke is a heat illness characterized by the rapid rise of core body temperature above 40 °C and central nervous system dysfunction. According to the health regulator, common symptoms include lethargy, seizures, coma, hallucinations, inattention, memory loss, cognitive impairment and language impairment.

Other important signs include having a headache, feeling nausea, shortness of breath and increased heart rate or muscle spasms.

The death rate from heatstroke is extremely high. Treating heatstroke is a race against time.

If someone has heatstroke, it's important to get them to rest in a cool place and cool their skin, such as soaking them in a bathtub or spraying them with cold water, packing cool, wet towels or ice on their head, armpits and groin area.

While cooling the patient, call an emergency center or send them to the hospital immediately to get medical help.

US median age reaches a record high

The median age of the US population hit a record high of 38.9 last year, according to new data released Thursday by the US Census Bureau.

While many people near their 40s may still feel young, 38.9 is an unusually high median in the US. In 2000, the median age of the US population was 35, and in 1980, it was 30.

The latest data is important because it shows that the US, like many European and Asian countries, is aging and having fewer babies, which poses challenges for the labor force, economy and society, The New York Time reported.

Andrew Beveridge, president of demographic data firm Social Explorer, said the low birth rate was the main reason for the rising median age.

In industrialized countries, women born in the 1980s and 1990s are more likely to prioritize education and working in their 20s, leading them to marry later and have fewer children, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The census data also shows that immigration has increased the number of white people and Asian people. Asians are the fastest-growing demographic group in the US. In addition, birth rates outpacing death rates are driving growth among Latinos and black people.
