2.天下皆知美之为美，斯恶已；皆知善之为善，斯不善已。有无相生，难易相成，长短相形，高下相盈，音声相和，前后相随，恒也。是以圣人处无为之事，行不言之教；万物作而弗始， 生而弗有，为而弗恃（shi：四声）,功成而弗居。夫唯弗居，是以不去。

 If all men in the world see what is fair,

then it is fair no more.

If all men know what is good,

then it is good no more.

What is and what is not give birth to one another,

What is difficult and what is easy complete one another,

Long and short complement one another,

High and low incline towards one another,

Sound and voice harmonize with one another,

Before and after follow one another.

Therefore the sage does everything without interference,

teaching without persuasion,

and letting everything begin uninitiated and go unpossessed.

Everything is done without being his act.

Only when he does not dwell on success,

can it not be taken away.
