Some feel that the Olympic Games is a stimulating event that can help increase the bonds between countries, whereas, many state that it is simply an extravagant waste of tax revenue. This essay shall explore both views; however, in my opinion, I reason that the Olympics have a profound and positive influence despite the expense.
One of the main reasons why the Olympics are considered by some to be a waste of taxpayers' money is that it places an excessive amount of financial pressure on the host country. In order to hold the event, the demand for overly expensive state-of-the-art facilities and costly infrastructure is catered to, a fact that may do more harm than good to the host nation, especially developing nations, as the prestige generated is tantalizingly tempting. Many states, hence, are willing to undertake the many years it can take to accommodate the event, and subsequently, a large chunk of taxpayer funds is sucked into the project, which in many cases takes years for the debt that was incurred to be repaid.
Despite the cost however, the overarching reason for people believing that the Olympics brings nations together is due to the fact that it is the only positive global event, besides the ‘World Cup’, that truly motivates citizens from all nations to unify. Being an event with thousands of years of history, it has been celebrated as a method for nations and peoples to set aside their cultural, political, and religious differences in deference to a higher calling of athletic spirit. Especially in today’s world, where television and the Internet serve as ubiquitous mediums for citizens to receive information and to communicate, the Olympics has the capability to bridge cultures and peoples across borders, thus helping to unite the world, regardless of the cost.
In conclusion, it is clear the Olympics can manifest a financial burden for many less well-off nations, yet in my opinion, there is no doubt that this is the only global-level event that truly enables people from all over the world to interact with each other, while contemporaneously, promoting the host country.
