L92 Tomb SweepingDay English Only

A: Ican’t wait for spring break! Do you have any plans?

B: I’m going to visit my grandparents in my hometown. How aboutyou?

A: Idon’t have any specific plans so far, but I know I’m going to be celebratingTomb Sweeping Day that Wednesday.

B: I’ve heard several people mention it around school. How doesyour family usually celebrate?

A: Myparents and I usually go to an extended family member’s house the day before toprepare and catch up with relatives. Then, on the morning of Tomb Sweeping Day,we travel to my grandma’s grave to pay our respects and sweep her tomb.

B: What do you prepare on the day before?

A: Wealways make sure to bring lots of food, incense, and flowers.

B: Wow, sounds like a lot of work.

A: Webelieve that the spirits of ancestors return to our world during this time; wewant my grandma to be happy when she comes back! Some of my other familymembers will also reminisce and tell stories about her to honor her spirit.

B: Sounds great. Is there anything else you do that day? I heardsome of our classmates say that they’re going to go fly kites.

A: Myyounger cousins love to fly kites. I sometimes join them, but I personallyprefer going on walks or simply relaxing and appreciating the nature in theparks.

B: That seems refreshing! Maybe I’ll also do the same this TombSweeping Day.

A:Make sure you also get your hands on some qingtuan! They’re my favorite thingto eat during this time of spring.

B: Will do. Are there any fillings you recommend?

A: Ilike the traditional fillings of red bean paste and black sesame paste, andalso the more recent filling of salted egg yolk with dried meat floss.

B: I’ll make sure to eat some during this spring break!
