[00:12.00]Dorothy followed the Yellow Brick Road all afternoon, and then she wondered where she would sleep for the night.

[00:18.41]Not far ahead she saw a small Munchkin village, but all the houses seemed empty.

[00:25.07]When she came to the last and biggest house in the village, she understood why.

[00:29.34]Everyone in the village was there.

[00:32.34]All the Munchkins knew who Dorothy was.

[00:35.40]She was famous, and Boq, the host, was very happy to have her as a guest.

[00:41.26]"You killed the Wicked Witch of the East.

[00:44.04]You must be a powerful witch," Boq said to Dorothy.

[00:49.49]"I am not a witch," replied Dorothy. "I am an ordinary girl."

[00:56.69]"Girl or witch," said Boq, "you can stay at my house."

[01:03.98]In the morning Dorothy said good-bye and continued down the Yellow Brick Road.

[01:08.97]She hadn't walked far when she came to a cornfield.

[01:12.21]In the cornfield was a scarecrow.

[01:15.24]As Dorothy looked at the scarecrow, she thought she saw it blink its eyes.

[01:21.23]"Impossible," thought Dorothy. Then the scarecrow smiled and nodded its head.

[01:27.49]Curious, Dorothy went over to the scarecrow.

[01:31.23]"Good day," said the Scarecrow.

[01:34.43]"Did you speak?" asked Dorothy.

[01:37.29]"Yes," answered the Scarecrow. "How are you?"

[01:41.68]"I'm fine," replied Dorothy. "And you?"

[01:46.44]"I'm not well," said the Scarecrow. "I'm stuck to this pole. Can you help me?"

[01:53.03]Straw men are very light, so Dorothy was able to easily lift him from the pole.

[01:58.77]"Thank you," said the Scarecrow. "I feel better now."

[02:03.31]"You're welcome," said Dorothy.

[02:06.32]"Who are you?" asked the Scarecrow. "And where are you going?"

[02:11.51]"My name is Dorothy, and I am going to the Emerald City to see the Wizard of Oz."

[02:17.01]"Where is the Emerald City, and who is Oz?" asked the Scarecrow.

[02:21.75]"Don't you know?" Dorothy asked in surprise.

[02:25.76]"No, I don't know anything," answered the Scarecrow sadly.

[02:30.49]"My head is made of straw, so I have no brain."

[02:36.02]"Oh," said Dorothy. "I'm sorry to hear that. Oz is a great wizard."

[02:42.30]"Do you think Oz could give me a brain?" asked the Scarecrow hopefully.

[02:47.15]"I don't know," said Dorothy. "But come with me and we will ask him together.

[02:54.48]I'm scared to go and see the Wizard alone. Are you scared?"

[02:58.61]"Oh, I'm not afraid," answered the Scarecrow.

[03:02.51]"I'll tell you a secret: there is only one thing in the world that I am afraid of—"

[03:07.47]"The farmer who made you?" interrupted Dorothy.

[03:11.69]"Oh no," said the Scarecrow. "I'm afraid of fire."

[03:16.77]"Let's not talk about fire and scary things," said Dorothy. "Tell me a story."

[03:22.43]"Me?" exclaimed the Scarecrow. "My life has been too short.

[03:27.88]I was made only two days ago.

[03:30.49]Why don't you tell me about the place you are from?"

[03:34.20]Dorothy told the Scarecrow about her aunt and uncle and their farm in Kansas.

[03:38.62]She was very sad.

[03:40.68]"Why are you sad?" asked the Scarecrow.

[03:44.21]"You said Kansas is dull and boring. Why do you want to go back?"

[03:49.19]"Because, my brainless friend, there is no place like home," said Dorothy, weeping.

[03:55.94]"Shall we spend the night over there?" asked the Scarecrow, pointing to a cottage.

[04:01.17]"Okay," said Dorothy.

[04:03.76]The next morning when Dorothy woke up, she said, "I need water."

[04:08.31]"Why do you need water?" asked the Scarecrow.

[04:11.65]"I need water to wash my face and to drink with breakfast," she replied.

[04:17.32]"Being alive sounds inconvenient," said the Scarecrow.

[04:20.93]"You need to sleep, wash, eat, and drink.

[04:25.12]But you have a brain, and I'd do anything for a brain."

[04:29.68]Behind the cottage they found a clear spring.

[04:32.69]Dorothy realized she didn't have much bread left, so she was glad her friend didn't eat.

[04:38.00]After breakfast Dorothy was startled to hear what sounded like a low groan.

[04:42.82]The noise came from the forest nearby.

[04:45.88]"Wh . . . what was that?" asked Dorothy fearfully.

[04:49.70]"I don't know," said the Scarecrow.

[04:52.96]"But we should go look. Someone may be hurt."

[04:57.19]They heard another low groan. "Look!" shouted Dorothy.

[05:01.84]"What's that through the trees?"

[05:04.27]They entered the forest and were amazed at what they saw.

[05:07.83]A man, made of tin and holding an ax, stood frozen, as if he was about to chop a tree.
