[00:11.93]Dorothy lived on a farm in Kansas with her aunt Em and uncle Henry.
[00:18.57]Her aunt and uncle were hardworking and quiet.
[00:21.90]They spent all their time working, so they had no time to play with Dorothy.
[00:26.29]Dorothy would have been lonely if it weren't for her dog, Toto.
[00:31.22]One day Dorothy and Toto stopped playing, and Aunt Em and Uncle Henry stopped working.
[00:36.94]They all looked at the sky. Dorothy didn't like what she saw.
[00:41.93]Across the field the sky was the color of night.
[00:45.49]Suddenly a flash of lightning split the darkness, and the wind began to howl.
[00:52.52]"A cyclone is coming," said Uncle Henry.
[00:56.01]"I'll help the animals. Em, you and Dorothy go to the storm cellar."
[01:01.21]Toto jumped out of Dorothy's arms, ran into the house, and hid under a bed.
[01:06.40]Aunt Em ran to the storm cellar, but Dorothy ran after Toto.
[01:10.75]The house shook violently and then began to spin.
[01:17.18]The house shook again, and the spinning stopped.
[01:20.70]Holding Toto in her arms, Dorothy looked out the window.
[01:25.07]She was amazed by what she saw.
[01:28.02]The boring, colorless landscape of Kansas had been replaced with flowers, fountains, and brightly colored birds.
[01:37.51]Strange, tiny people were running toward the house.
[01:42.82]Outside, an old woman approached Dorothy and bowed.
[01:46.54]"You're a great hero," said the woman.
[01:50.39]"We thank you for killing the Wicked Witch of the East.
[01:53.73]The Munchkins are free!"
[01:55.87]The other people cheered, but Dorothy was confused.
[02:00.01]"I haven't killed anyone," she said fearfully.
[02:05.32]"Well, your house did," said the old woman.
[02:09.17]"And the result is the same—the Munchkins are free."
[02:13.20]"Oh dear!" cried Dorothy. "The house fell on her. Who was she?"
[02:19.59]"She was the Wicked Witch of the East," said the woman.
[02:23.96]"And the Munchkins were her slaves."
[02:27.43]"Are you a Munchkin?" asked Dorothy.
[02:31.26]"Oh, no. I am the Good Witch of the North.
[02:35.77]I came because I heard the Wicked Witch was dead."
[02:39.63]"Where I come from," said Dorothy, "all witches are dead."
[02:44.76]"That doesn't surprise me," said the Good Witch.
[02:48.49]"If houses often fall from the sky, not even the Great Oz could survive."
[02:55.55]"The Great Oz?" asked Dorothy.
[02:59.32]"Yes, the Wizard of Oz," answered the Good Witch.
[03:03.27]"He is the most powerful wizard in the land."
[03:07.63]Dorothy was about to ask something when the Munchkins all gave a sudden shout.
[03:13.76]The body of the Wicked Witch was gone. Only her silver shoes were left.
[03:19.92]"These shoes are yours now," said the Good Witch.
[03:24.20]"They are magical, but I do not know what they do."
[03:29.22]"Can they take me back to Kansas?" said Dorothy.
[03:32.73]"Maybe," said the Good Witch, "but you should ask the Wizard of Oz."
[03:39.11]"Where does he live?" asked Dorothy.
[03:42.71]"He lives in the Emerald City," said the Good Witch.
[03:46.94]"It's a long journey, but easy if you follow the Yellow Brick Road."
[03:52.74]"The Yellow Brick Road?" said Dorothy.
[03:56.45]"Yes," answered the Good Witch.
[03:59.73]"It begins over there and goes right to the Emerald City."
[04:06.11]"Will you come with me?" asked Dorothy hopefully.
[04:09.93]"No, I cannot," said the Good Witch. "But I will give you a kiss.
[04:15.69]My kiss will protect you. No one will harm you.
[04:20.72]Well, no one except maybe the Wicked Witch of the West."
[04:26.98]"The Wicked Witch of the West?" said Dorothy, puzzled.
[04:31.22]"Yes, you must be careful of her," said the Good Witch.
[04:36.68]Dorothy had many questions, but the Good Witch kissed her on the forehead just then.
[04:41.95]Dorothy could feel the magic enveloping her body.
[04:46.94]"Good-bye, good luck, and remember: stay on the Yellow Brick Road," said the Good Witch.
[04:54.42]Toto gave a loud bark as the Good Witch suddenly disappeared.
[05:01.51]"Well, Toto," said Dorothy, "I guess we should pack and then follow the Yellow Brick Road."
[05:07.94]She put some food in her picnic basket and then locked the door to her house.
[05:13.63]"Come along, Toto. It's time to go see the Wizard."
