[00:00:00.00]The Jungle Book
[00:00:03.10]Chapter 14
[00:00:04.90]A Surprise Visitor
[00:00:10.80]Mowgli followed the woman into her hut.
[00:00:14.60]He felt nervous, but the woman seemed kind.
[00:00:18.60]Inside the hut was a bed.
[00:00:20.90]He also saw a large chest for storing grain and copper cooking pots.
[00:00:26.70]Hanging on the wall were images of gods and a tall glass.
[00:00:31.40]When Mowgli stepped in front of the glass, he gasped.
[00:00:36.90]"Another boy lives here!" he thought in surprise.
[00:00:40.80]He lifted an arm.
[00:00:43.30]So did the boy in the glass.
[00:00:46.00]Mowgli wiggled his fingers.
[00:00:48.50]Again the boy did just what Mowgli was doing.
[00:00:53.20]The woman laughed.
[00:00:56.90]She pointed from Mowgli to the mirror.
[00:01:00.20]"Oh!"
[00:01:01.90]Finally Mowgli understood.
[00:01:04.80]"That's me in the glass!"
[00:01:07.40]The woman gave him some milk and bread.
[00:01:11.60]Then she lay her hand on his head.
[00:01:15.10]"Nathoo? Do you remember the shoes I gave you?"
[00:01:20.40]Mowgli shook his head, unable to understand.
[00:01:25.00]The woman touched his foot.
[00:01:27.00]It felt as hard as an animal horn.
[00:01:30.40]"No," she said sadly.
[00:01:33.60]"These feet have never worn shoes.
[00:01:37.10]But you look like my Nathoo, and you shall be my son."
[00:01:41.80]Mowgli had never been under a roof before.
[00:01:46.80]He climbed on a stool to touch the straw over his head.
[00:01:52.60]The hut had a door and a window.
[00:01:56.40]But he could also rip the roof's straw if he felt trapped.
[00:02:00.80]That thought eased his mind.
[00:02:03.30]But something else was bothering him.
[00:02:06.10]"I must learn the humans' language," he realized.
[00:02:10.80]"I cannot live with people if I don't understand their words."
[00:02:15.90]So as soon as Messua pronounced a word, Mowgli repeated it.
[00:02:21.30]Before dark he had learned the names of many things in the hut.
[00:02:27.60]At bedtime Messua and her husband shut the door to the hut.
[00:02:35.30]Mowgli felt trapped.
[00:02:39.60]He quickly slipped through a window.
[00:02:46.60]"I must fetch him!" Messua said.
[00:02:50.10]Her husband stopped her.
[00:02:52.40]"Leave him alone," he said.
[00:02:54.70]"The boy has never slept on a bed before.
[00:02:58.00]If he is indeed our son, he won't run away."
[00:03:01.40]Mowgli stretched out in some long grass at the edge of the field.
[00:03:09.70]Before he could close his eyes,
[00:03:14.60]a soft gray nose poked him.
[00:03:17.40]"Gray Brother!" Mowgli cried in delight.
[00:03:23.70]The wolf sniffed Mowgli.
[00:03:26.20]"Yuck!" he said.
[00:03:29.10]"This is a terrible reward for following you.
[00:03:32.20]You smell like wood smoke and cattle—human smells!"
[00:03:37.60]Mowgli laughed.
[00:03:41.40]"Is everything okay?"
[00:03:43.80]"Not exactly," Gray Brother replied.
[00:03:48.10]"I have news about Shere Khan.
[00:03:50.80]He's gone off to hunt for a while.
[00:03:53.60]But the red flower burned him badly.
[00:03:57.30]He promises to hunt you down when he returns.
[00:04:00.80]He wants to lay your bones in the river!"
[00:04:04.40]"He doesn't scare me," Mowgli said.
[00:04:08.10]"I'm going to hunt him down one day!
[00:04:12.00]Even Mother Wolf says that's true."
[00:04:15.30]Gray Brother looked worried.
[00:04:17.90]"Shere Khan is very dangerous, Mowgli. Be careful."
[00:04:22.80]"I'll be careful."
[00:04:25.60]Mowgli yawned.
[00:04:29.00]"I'm so tired tonight.
[00:04:31.30]I learned many new things today.
[00:04:33.90]Please bring me more news soon."
[00:04:38.60]His eyes closed for a moment.
[00:04:41.40]"You won't forget that you're a wolf, will you?"
[00:04:44.90]Gray Brother asked anxiously.
[00:04:47.40]"Never," Mowgli promised.
[00:04:50.70]"I will always remember that I love you and our cave.
[00:04:55.10]But you must remember something, Gray Brother.
[00:04:58.50]The wolf pack cast me out."
[00:05:01.60]"The man pack could cast you out too," Gray Brother said.
[00:05:06.90]"People are only people, Mowgli.
[00:05:10.00]Their talk is like the talk of frogs in a pond.
[00:05:13.90]It doesn't mean much."
[00:05:15.90]Mowgli shrugged.
[00:05:17.70]His eyes closed again.
[00:05:19.90]"I will let you sleep," Gray Brother said finally.
[00:05:24.30]"I'll come again in a few weeks. Look for me in the bamboo.
[00:05:28.70]It's at the edge of the people's fields."
[00:05:31.90]"Okay," Mowgli whispered.
[00:05:35.70]"Good night."
