Devouring Time, blunt thou the lion's paws,

And make the earth devour her own sweet brood;

Pluck the keen teeth from the fierce tiger's jaws,

And burn the long-lived phoenix in her blood; 4

Make glad and sorry seasons as thou fleets,

And do whate'er thou wilt, swift-footed Time,

To the wide world and all her fading sweets;

But I forbid thee one most heinous crime, 8

O, carve not with thy hours my love's fair brow,

Nor draw no lines there with thine antique pen.

Him in thy course untainted do allow,

For beauty's pattern to succeeding men. 12

 Yet do thy worst, old Time; despite thy wrong,

 My love shall in my verse ever live young.

  但是，时光老头子，不怕你狠毒：

  我爱人会在我诗中把青春永驻。

【译解】这首诗是诗人对“时间”说的话。诗人对“时间”说：“你尽管残酷地对待一切吧，但不准使我爱人的美凋谢。不过，即使你毁灭了他的美，他的美仍然会在我诗中永存着！”——第二行：土地的爱子指地上生长的美丽的生物。第十一行：“不染杂色”意思是不受伤害。
