Spain has reported its first two deaths from acute hepatitis, or liver inflammation, among children – an illness whose causes are unknown that is being monitored by world health officials. Spain's Health Ministry said 46 cases have been reported and three required liver transplants. Of the three, two died – a 15-month-old baby in June and a 6-year-old in July. The ministry said in a statement on Thursday that 507 cases had been reported in 21 European countries as of July 28, with 273 in Britain. In the United States, there have been at least 180 cases and six reported deaths. Spain said it began closely monitoring the situation following an alert to the World Health Organization by Britain following a spike in cases.

US Senate passes Inflation Reduction Act

The US Senate on Sunday passed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which was unveiled last month by Democratic Party senators to relieve inflationary pressures. The budget reconciliation bill includes several key provisions related to climate and energy, healthcare, tax reform and deficit reduction. After a marathon 27-hour weekend session of debate and Republican efforts to derail the package, the Senate approved the legislation by a 51-50 party line vote, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking ballot. "This bill also makes the largest investment ever in combating the existential crisis of climate change," President Joe Biden said, adding "the House should pass this as soon as possible" and he looks forward to signing it into law.

China's imports and exports totaled 23.6 trillion yuan during the first seven months of the year, surging 10.4 percent year-on-year, official customs data released on Sunday showed. Exports rose 14.7 percent from a year earlier to 13.37 trillion yuan, while imports were valued at 10.23 trillion yuan, increasing 5.3 percent from the year before. During the period, China's trade with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the European Union and the United States expanded by 13.2, 8.9 and 11.8 percent from a year ago respectively.  Zhou Mi, a senior researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, said the nation's stable foreign trade expansion is mainly attributable to its steady economic and trade cooperation with major trading partners.

Hainan conducts mass testing

South China's Hainan province conducted all-inclusive COVID-19 nucleic acid testing on Sunday, authorities said at a news conference on epidemic prevention and control. Hainan reported a total of 827 confirmed cases and 313 asymptomatic cases between Aug 1 and midday Aug 7, authorities added. The outbreak is still in the rising stage and the proportion of people under quarantine among newly confirmed cases is increasing, the officials said, adding most confirmed cases are mild and no severe or critical cases are presently being reported. Supporting teams with the State Council's joint prevention and control mechanism have arrived in Hainan to help with the situation, according to an official. The preeminent strain in this outbreak is the Omicron BA.5.1.3 variant, making Sanya’s flare-up the first time it has been detected in China.
