A Tragedy [ˈtrædʒədi]悲惨的事 or a Blessing [ˈblesɪŋ]祝福;好事
Years ago in Scotland[ˈskɑːtlənd]苏格兰 ,the Clark family had a dream to travel [ˈtrævl]旅行 the United States with their nine children. Clark and his wife worked and saved,and finally had enough money and got passports [ˈpæˌspɔrts]护照 and reservations [ˌrɛzərˈveɪʃənz]预订 for the whole family on a new liner [ˈlaɪnər]邮轮 to the United States.
The entire [ɪnˈtaɪər]全部 family was filled with expectation [ˌekspekˈteɪʃn]预期,希望 and excitement[ɪkˈsaɪtmənt]激动 about life in America. However,seven days before their departure [dɪˈpɑːrtʃər]离开,the youngest son was bitten[ˈbɪtn]咬 by a dog. The doctor sewed [soʊd]缝 up the boy and hung [hʌŋ]悬挂 a yellow sheet on the Clarks' front door. Because of the possibility[ˌpɑːsəˈbɪləti]可能 of rabies [ˈreɪbiːz]狂犬病, they were being separated for fourteen days.
The family's dreams were dashed [dæʃt]该死的,急冲. They would not be able to make the trip to America as they had planned. The father shed tears of disappointment and cursed [kɜːrst]诅咒 both his son and God for their misfortune.
Five days later,the tragic news spread throughout [θruːˈaʊt]自始至终 Scotland-Titanic [taɪˈtænɪk]巨大的 had sunk[sʌŋk]下沉. The unsinkable[ʌn'sɪŋkəbl]不会下沉的 ship had sunk, taking hundreds of lives with it. The Clark family was to have been on that ship,but because the son had been bitten by a dog,they were left behind in Scotland.When Mr. Clark heard the news,he hugged his son and thanked him for saving the family. He thanked God for saving their lives and turning what he felt was a tragedy into a blessing.
Although we may not always understand,all things happen for a reason.
