Measures to keep foreign trade stable
国办发文促进外贸平稳发展

The country will further open up the economy and carry out cross-cyclical adjustments to support medium, small and micro-sized foreign trade companies, and guarantee their orders and stabilize expectations, according to guidelines on further stabilizing foreign trade released by the State Council. The guidelines detailed 15 measures including fiscal and financial support for foreign trade companies as well as incentives for new forms of businesses in foreign trade. 
近日，国务院办公厅印发《关于做好跨周期调节进一步稳外贸的意见》指出，要进一步扩大开放，做好跨周期调节，助企纾困特别是扶持中小微外贸企业，努力保订单、稳预期。《意见》提出15条政策措施，包括加强对外贸企业财税金融政策支持，以及进一步鼓励外贸新业态发展等。

China will also adopt measures to ease the supply chain risks for foreign trade companies and encourage them to sign long-term deals with shipping firms. The guidelines stressed efforts on imports of bulk commodities to ensure sufficient domestic supply. The country will further enhance trade liberalization and facilitation, and use the implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership as an opportunity to further stabilize foreign trade, the guidelines said.
《意见》指出，要采取措施缓解国际物流等外贸供应链压力。鼓励外贸企业与航运企业签订长期协议。做好大宗商品进口工作，积极保障大宗商品国内供给。提升贸易自由化便利化水平，将《区域全面经济伙伴关系协定》生效实施作为稳外贸重要抓手。

China's steel output declines in 2021

China produced an estimated 1.03 billion tons of steel last year, down 35 million tons from 2020, said the China Iron and Steel Association on Monday. In the first 11 months of 2021, China's steel production reached 946 million tons, decreasing 2.6% year-on-year. 
中国钢铁工业协会1月10日表示，预计2021年全年钢产量为10.3亿吨，比上年减少约3500万吨。2021年前11个月，全国钢产量9.46亿吨，同比下降2.6%。

The steel and iron industry's combined profits surged 86.46% year-on-year, to 351.7 billion yuan, during the January-November period last year as rising costs and demand pushed up prices. Enterprises in the industry accelerated green and low-carbon transformation in 2021,  with considerable reductions in energy consumption and sulfur dioxide emissions per ton of steel produced.

Media workers carry backpacks from Beijing 2008

Foreign reporters have been seen carrying around bags from the 2008 Summer Olympics as they work inside the media center for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games. An Iranian journalist said he would carry the bag from Beijing 2008 every time he covered sports competitions. “A backpack is a very important item for a photojournalist, and this bag is of high quality and its design is user-friendly,” he said. 
有人发现，一些外国记者在北京2022年冬奥会媒体中心工作时，随身携带着2008年北京夏季奥运会的背包。一名伊朗记者称，他每次报道体育赛事时，都会带着2008年北京奥运会的背包。这位记者说："对于摄影记者来说，背包是一件非常重要的物品，这个包质量很好，设计也很人性化。"

Fernando, a Spanish journalist, said that he carried the bag with him during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. For the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, media workers from around the world will receive a new media package that contains items such as an insulated cup and cultural souvenirs depicting paper-cut window grilles or Chinese knots, among other gifts.

US sets new grim pandemic records

The United States shattered daily COVID-19 case records again as nearly 1.5 million new cases were reported across the country on Monday, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University. A total of 1,483,656 new cases and 1,906 new deaths were reported on Monday. The latest COVID-19 surge in the United States driven by the highly infectious Omicron variant is leading to record high hospitalizations, and critical shortages of healthcare workers. 
据美国约翰斯•霍普金斯大学发布的最新统计数据，全美1月10日新增新冠确诊病例近150万例，再创疫情暴发以来新高。数据显示，美国1月10日新增新冠确诊病例数高达1483656例，新增死亡1906例。美国最新暴发的这波疫情高峰由高传染性的奥密克戎变种毒株引发，并导致了创纪录的住院率和医疗工作者的严重短缺。

Health officials said the unvaccinated pushed US hospitalizations to new pandemic highs. COVID-19 deaths are also spiking. The country is averaging over 1,500 deaths daily, a new high since mid-October last year, CDC data show. COVID-19 cases among US children are "increasing exponentially," far exceeding the peak of past waves of the pandemic. Nearly 8.5 million children in the United States have tested positive for COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic.
