“Oh, Father Abraham!”Shylock exclaimed.“What suspicious people these Christians are!Their own hard dealings teach them to suspect others. Tell me this,Bassanio. If your friend'spayment is late, what should I gain by the forfeiture? A pound of man's flesh is not worth anything more than a pound of mutton or beef.I'm only lending the money to buy your friendship. If you don’t take it,then so be it."
At last Antonio, who really believed that
Shylock was trying to buy his favor, signed the bond against the advice of Bassanio.
The rich heiress that Bassanio was in love with lived near Venice,at a place called Belmont. Her name was Portia, and she was one of the most pleasant and graceful women of Italy.
Bassanio was thus so supplied with money by his friend Antonio.Soon Bassanio set out for Belmont with a splendid train, attended by a gentleman named Gratiano.
At Belmont,Bassanio succeeded in making a good impression. Portia immediately consented to accept him for a husband.
Bassanio confessed to Portia that he had no fortune and that all he had were his high birth and noble ancestry. But Portia did not care, because she loved him for his worthy qualities and had enough money herself.
