Antonio and Bassanio went to Shylock together.Antonio asked the Jew to lend him three thousand ducats, and told him that the rate of interest did not matter.
Antonio said he would borrow the money with the merchandise on his ships as a mortgage.
This made Shylock think carefully.“This is a golden opportunity Shylock thought to himself.“If I can have him by the balls,I can make him pay dearly. He hates our Jewish nation. He lends out money without interest. He embarrasses me in front of other merchants, calling me a usurer. This is my chance to take revenge!”
“So,Shylock, will you lend me the money?”Antonio said, growing impatient.
“Mr.Antonio, you have often railed at me about my money and my business,”Shylock replied.“You have also called me an unbeliever and a cutthroat dog. You have spat on my Jewish garments, and treated me as if I were a dog. Well, now it appears you need my help, and you come to me and say,'Shylock, lend me some money :Does a dog have money? Is it possible for a dog to lend three thousand ducats?Shall I bow down to say,All right, fair sir.You spat on me last Wednesday. Another time you called me a dog. For these courtesies I will lend you some
money?”
