TheListeners
by Walterde la Mare
"Isthere anybody there?" said the Traveller,
Knockingon the moonlit door;
And hishorse in the silence champed the grass
Of theforest's ferny floor;
And a birdflew up out of the turret,
Above theTraveller's head:
飞到旅人的头上;
And hesmote upon the door again a second time;
"Isthere anybody there?" he said.
But no onedescended to the Traveller;
No headfrom the leaf-fringed sill
Leanedover and looked into his grey eyes,
Where hestood perplexed and still.
But only ahost of phantom listeners
That dweltin the lone house then
Stoodlistening in the quiet of the moonlight
To thatvoice from the world of men:
Stoodthronging the faint moonbeams on the dark stair,
That goesdown to the empty hall,
Hearkeningin an air stirred and shaken
By thelonely Traveller's call.
And hefelt in his heart their strangeness,
Theirstillness answering his cry,
While hishorse moved, cropping the dark turf,
'Neath thestarred and leafy sky;
向前移步,啮咬那黑魆魆的草根;
For hesuddenly smote on the door, even
Louder,and lifted his head:—
"Tellthem I came, and no one answered,
That Ikept my word," he said.
Never theleast stir made the listeners,
Thoughevery word he spake
Fellechoing through the shadowiness of the still house
From theone man left awake:
Ay, theyheard his foot upon the stirrup,
And thesound of iron on stone,
And howthe silence surged softly backward,
When theplunging hoofs were gone.
