Lesson Five   First Principles 91

Do you think it a golden rule to give people you love memortable things according to your ability?

4. 1) Yes, I think it's good to give people we love or like memorable gifts according to our ability. I don't like the practice of giving a present equal in price in return for the one you've received. I believe true love or friendship shouldn't be measured by the cost of gifts. If I could buy a new flat for my parents, it would be fine. But if I couldn't, my parents would be glad to get a pair of slippers each. A framed photo of me would please my best friend, as well.Gifts we make ourselves may be more memorable and valuable than those we buy.

Do you think our Spring Festival has been commercialized out of ist real meaning?what do you think is the best way to celebrate this traditional Chinese holiday?

4.2) Yes, I think our Spring Festival has been greatly commercialized and is gradually losing its real meaning, especially in the cities. The most important thing for this traditional Chinese festival is actually the family reunion. The fun of dumplings is not found in the eating, but in the making. Now many families buy frozen dumplings from supermarkets. This in fact deprives them of the joy of working together to create home-made dumplings, which symbolizes unity and harmony.

Another thing I don't like is ads of all kinds telling you what gifts you should give your loved ones, or what restaurant you should go to for your festival dinner. Even the traditional fairs are commercialized. There you find a large number of stalls selling what they claim to be traditional food and wares. Young people and children don't really learn much bout traditional Chinese culture there, which is supposed to be what these fairs are held for

Laura had a memorable christmas

you can use this outline

1) where she spent that particular chrismas, who with

2)what gofts she got and what she did with those peple.

3) in what way this christmas was memorable.

5. For the first time, Laura spent Christmas on a farm, in a very different way from the usual Christmas celebrations at home. Instead of parties and all the amusements of the city, she and her family had a lot fresh air and exercise. For gifts, instead of the ballet dress she had wanted, she got a picture and a small brooch that had belonged to her grandmother.

However, Laura would never forget this Christmas. It offered her an occasion to show her gratitude for what her parents had done for her education and to repay their love by showing understanding of the family's circumstances. Besides, her parents trusted her and told her all their problems. In her mind, whatever they gave her was/were gifts of true love;wherever they spent Christmas, it was a time to express love for one another. She decided to help her parents tide over the difficult period, and therefore she appreciated all their efforts to make her and her brothers happy
