He lifted his golden mask, Raya looked up intoher father’s face. His eyes were full of pride as hesmiled down at her.

他掀起金色面具。拉雅仰头望着父亲的面庞。他正低头朝她微笑，眼中满是骄傲。

“Like I said, not one foot in the inner circle. You lost, Raya,” he said.

Raya raised one eyebrow. “Did I?”

“我说过，没人能踏进内圈。你失败了，拉雅。”他说。

拉雅扬起眉毛说：“是吗?”

Her father glanced down. Raya’s foot was stretched out in front her. The tip of her toe restedon the Dragon Gem’s inner circle.

她父亲望向地面。拉雅一只脚伸在身前，趾尖落在神龙宝石内圈之内。

“Raya...” Her father shook his head and chuckled.“ I probably should have said two feet.”

Raya stood up, grinning. “Hey. Don’t beat yourself up too much, Chief Benja. You gave it your best.”

“拉雅......”她父亲摇了摇头，笑道，“我应该说两只脚的。” 拉雅站起身，咧嘴笑了。“嘿，别太自责了，蓬加大族长。你尽力了。” “我不自责。而且你该叫我父亲或爸。干得漂亮，小水珠。”

“I won’ t. And it’s either Father or Ba to you. Youdid good, dewdrop,” he said, using the old Kumandranterm of endearment. “You passed the test.” 

He held out a hand to Raya, inviting her to join him in the inner circle.

他用龙佑之邦的俗语亲昵地称呼她，“你通过了考验。” 他向拉雅伸出手，邀请她同他一道走进内圈。

Raya paused, savoring the moment. Her dream,at last, had come true. She stepped into the innercircle.

拉雅停了下来，仔细品味这一时刻。她的梦想终于实现了。她进入了内圈。

The Dragon Gem hovered just inches away,washing her face in blue light. Up close, Rayacould see the glimmer within the stone. She couldfeel the power of its magic. “Wow,” she whispered.“The spirit of Sisu.”

神龙宝石悬浮在她上方几英寸处，她的脸浸透在蓝色光芒 中。这么近的距离，她能看到宝石内部的微光，能感觉到它的魔 力。“哇，”她低声说，“希苏的灵魂。”

Benja knelt and bowed, raising his hands in acircle before his forehead. Raya did the same. Shewatched, entranced1, as tiny droplets of water roseinto the air, swirling and spiraling around the Gem.

蓬加跪下鞠了个躬，将双手举到额前围成一个圈。拉雅照做 了。她着迷地望着小水滴升入空中，围着宝石转啊转。

“For generations, our family has sworn toprotect the Gem,” Benja told his daughter. “Today,you will join that legacy.”

“我们家族世世代代都发誓守护这块宝石，”蓬加告诉女儿， “今天，你将继承这个传统。”

Benja scooped up a handful of the sacredwater and poured it over Raya’s bowed head. Asthe water trickled over Raya’s face, the dropletsbegan to glow. They floated away from her to jointhe drops encircling the Gem.

他舀起一捧圣水，洒在拉雅低垂的头上。水珠从她脸上流下，开始发光。它们从她脸上流走，与环绕宝石的水珠汇合。

“Raya, Princess of Heart, my daughter,” Benja intoned. “You are now a Guardian of the Dragon Gem.”

“拉雅，龙心公主，我的女儿，”蓬加满怀感情地说，“你已成为神龙宝石的守护者。”

Benja wrapped his arm proudly around his daughter. She leaned her head against his shoulder, at once exhausted and elated. For as long as Raya could remember, she had worked for this rite3 of passage to guardianship. All the months and years of training had been worth it. This was everything she’d ever wanted.

蓬加骄傲地拥住他女儿。她把头靠在他肩上，既疲惫又得意。自从她记事以来，她便在为成为守护者的这个仪式而努力。多年来的训练没有白费，这是她梦寐以求的一切。

词义辨析：

a couple of 表示“几个”，没有太多褒贬在里面，比如Here are a couple of examples. 这里有几个例子。

a handful of比较强调的就是“少量”、“少数”， 所以常常搭配only——only a handful of “就几个”。
